HENRY B. HAYES, OE VVOBURN, MASSACHUSETTS.
sApsH-H OLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 477,801, dated June 28, 1892. l
Application 'filed December 26, 1891. v Serial No. 416,158. (No model.)
110 all whom t may concern.:
Be it known that I, HENRY B. HAYES, a citizen of the United States, resid-ing at Woburn, in the county ofMiddlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVindoW-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein-to the accompanying drawings.
My invention has forits object to produce a window-fastener by means of which a window-sash may be secured firmly at any point in the frame, which shall be durable and easily'operatd, and by means of which, also, the sash may be pressed and held against the frame, so as to more completely exclude Vcoldv air, dust, and the like.
My invention consists in the novel construction and combination'of parts constituting an improved and serviceable window-fastening, all as hereinafter set forth, and as is' more particularly pointed out in the claims which are appendedhereto and made a part hereof.
I have shown my invention in the best form now known to me in theaccompanying drawings, to which reference will be made in the following description, and in which- Figure l is a front elevation of my device applied to a window. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2 2, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar section, but showing the securing-bolt withdrawn from contact with the sash and also showing the free end of the bolt which cornes in contact with the sash as provided with a facing of rubber or similar suitable material. Figs. 4. and 5 are perspectives of the casing and basepiece. Figs. 6 and 7 are respectively a plan and side view of the cam and its thumb-piece. Fig. 8 is a perspective of the bolt.
A represents a window frame or casing, and B a portion of a window-sash.
My device, as shown, consists chiefly of four parts-a bed-plate or base c, a case or cover d, a sliding bar or bolt f, and a cam gpro vided with a suitable projection by means of which the cam may be operated by the thumb The base c is preferably of the shape shown and is provided with two lugs or projections h to receive screws by means of which the device maybe firmly secured in place. The cover or case dis in form a counterpart of the base c, it being also provided with lugs h', which overlie those on the bedplate c, so that the retaining-screws will pass through the lugs on both the cover d and plate c. The sides of the cover,l extend downwardly from the top portion thereof, as shown, Fig. 4, for the reception of the sliding bar or boltf, forming a cavity within which said bolt orbar may slide. The end of the bolt f which is designed to come in contact with the window-sash is enlarged or provided with a shoe 7c,so'that it may have a broad and substantial bearing against the sash. The rear end of the bolt f is in contact with the cam or eccentric g, which for greater strength is pivoted on a post Z, which is preferably castintegral with the base c. The cam is provided with a projection m, by means of which it may be readily operated by the thumb and finger. A hole for the reception of a screw u is made through the coverd and post Z. This screw n may also pass into the window-frame and may thus serve asan additional means for securing the device rigidly in place. As it is desirable that the sliding bar or bolt f may as soon as the device is freed clear the window-sash, in order that' when the sash is moved the foot of the boltwill not bear against the sash and scratch or deface it, I provide a spring p, which is laid within a slot 10 length wise of said bolt f, said spring bearing at its rear end against the end of the said slot and at its forward end against the screw a", which passes through the cover d and through one end of the slot in the bolt f. When the cam is turned to force the bolt outwardly against the window-sash, the spring p is compressed, and as soon as the cam is turned in the opp:L site direction to free the bolt the spring operates to retract the slidingbolt f, as will be clear.
To render the grip of the bolt f on the sash more secure, as also to lessen the danger of defacin g the sash, the contact-face of the foot IOO sition, and if the Window be olosed.` forcing p 2, The window-fastener composed of the the sash against the casingwi-thsuch pressure ,base o, formed with thefpostl; and the lugs h as to eectively exclude cold air and dust'. h, the cover d, formed With lugs 7L h', the slid- The employment of acanl for actuatingand ing bolt f, the cam g, pivoted on post l and 5 holding the sliding bolt insures against the operating to positively press the bolt outward zo freeing of the fasteners by continual jarring into engagement with a Window-sash, the such as fasteners are subjected tor in-railwfayspringpifor retraoting the bolt, and the screws cars. n and o, substantially as described.
What I claim is- In testimony whereof I aix my signature in 1o 1. The Window-fastener composed of the presence of two Witnesses.
