Description

(No Model.)
J. BATMAN.
' CHIMNEY GAP.
No. 457,628. Patented Aug. 11, 1891.
' UNITED STATES i PATENT Curran.
JACOB BATMAN, OF SELINS GROVE, PENNSYLVANIA.
CHIMNEY-CAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 457,628, dated August 11, 1 891.
Application filed January 16, 1891.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J ACOB BATMAN, of Selins Grove, in the county of Snyder and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney- Caps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in chimney-caps; and it consists in an adjustable cap which is formed of four pieces which extend along the edges and tops of the chimney, four cap or corner pieces, and the clamping-screws which unite the parts and cover over the joints, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The object of my invention is to produce a chimney-cap which can be applied to chimneys of different shapes and sizes, and which will produce an ornamental finish at the same time that the top rows of bricks are secured rigidly in position.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a cap which embodies my invention. Fig. 2 is an inverted view. Fig. 3 is a vertical section.
A represents four horizontal pieces of any desired length and width, and which have their ends out at an angle, as shown, so that they will make a joint when brought together. The inner edges of these pieces A are inclined upward at any suitable angle, so as to not only prevent the rain or snow from running off the top of the pieces into the chimney, but for the purpose of deflecting the air upward as it passes over the top of the cap, and thus prevent it from passing down into the chimney and interfering with the draft. From the inner edge of these upwardly-inclined portions are the depending flanges B, which extend down toward the flue and which close it up all around the chimney, and thus make one continuous smooth flue all around the inside of the cap, meeting and corresponding with the brick-work.
Projecting downward from or near the outer edges of the pieces A are the vertical Serial No. 378,019. (No model.)
flanges O, which catch over the outer row of brick-work and clamp the bricks securely in position. These flanges may be of any desired width and extend down around the outside of the chimney any desired distance. If these flanges are set inward a slight distance from the outer edges of the pieces A, a flange is formed around the outer edge of the cap, as shown.
For the purpose of covering over the joints made by uniting the ends of the pieces A there is applied to each corner of the cap a corner-piece D, either of the shape here shown, or
any other that may be preferred, and upon the tops of which any suitable ornaments G may be secured. These corner-pieces fit over the entire corners of the chimney cap and have their inner ends inclined upward, so as to correspond to the flanges B. These corner-pieces are secured to the pieces A by means of clamping-bolts I, which are passed up through the'open-ended slots 0 in the pieces A and the corner-pieces, as shown, and then have the nuts J applied to them, so as to lock the pieces securely together. The
open-ended slots allow the corner-pieces to be made adjustable in relation to the pieces A, and hence the cap can be applied to chimneys of diiferent sizes and which have both square and oblong shapes. The corner-pieces are also provided with vertical flanges P, which extend down as far as the vertical flanges at the outer edges of the pieces A, and which flanges have suitable grooves'Q made in their inner and upper edges, so as to receive the outer edges of the pieces A, as shown. The caps cover all of the joints between the ends of the pieces A at the same time that they connect the pieces A rigidly together.
A cap constructed as here shown and described can be applied to all square and oblong chimneys, and while it gives the chimney a finished and ornamental appearance,
- 10 ving depending flanges on their outer edges 1 which are provided with horizontal grooves to receive the projecting edges of the pieces A, and clamping-bolts, the parts combined substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I aflix m y signature in I 5 presence of two witnesses.
JACOB BATMAN. Fitnesses:
