CONSTRUCTION OF ANDIRON S.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 4,523, dated. May 16, 1846.

To all whom it may concern: I

Be it known that I, J. R. REMINGTON, of Lowndes county, in the State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Andirons, and that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the principle or character thereof which distinguishes it from all other things before known and of the manner of making, constructing, and using the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making part of this specification, which shows an isometrical view of the andirons in a fire place.

The nature of my invention consists in forming that portion of the andiron which sustains the fuel into a box that shall receive from the corners of the fire place the air which usually goes up the chimney, and tends to decrease the draft, and prevent or retard the ignition of the fuel,and directs it when heated under the center of the fire by which a more perfect combustion of the fuel is obtained, and all tendency to smoke is prevented.

The construction is as follows: The front part (a) of the andiron may be made of any of the usual forms, but the horizontal bar, which joins it to the main part, expands into a broad flat horizontal plate (1)) that assumes the form of the jambs of the fire place, completely filling the corners on each side as shown in the drawings; from the front of this horizontal plate (72) a fianch or vertical plate (0) extends down to the hearth, and in it there is an opening for the admission of air; a similar plate (d) also extends down from theinner side or that next the opposite andiron, which together with the front one and the jambs and hearth form an air box in each corner; this inner plate (d) has an opening in its center at the bottom from which a short pipe (6) leads so that the air issuing fro-m it is carried up into the center of the fire in a heated state, and the corner draft is avoided.

Having thus fully described my improvements, What I claim therein as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'

Constructing the andiron in the manner described, so as to form an air box in the corners of the fire place, as above set forth.
