FIRE Box.
Application filed August 3, 192 Serial No. 4?,91'1.
My invention relates to ire-boxes for in fireplaces of the type associated chimneys and inanteis. and one object provide a structure of this character sisting' of sections which can he install cost.
A further objectto provide i. d. structure of this character which can readily installed without the aid oi ski workmen and is of such shape and prop tions as to insure the esra iie of the smoke. gases and other products ot' combustion to the chimney instead of into the room (hr taining the fireplace as frequently occurs where the fire-box is built of brick nil iniproperly shaped and proportioned.
In order that the invention may be fully understood, reference will now he had to the accompanying drawings. in which:
Fig. l is a front elevation of the tir -lair.
Fin. 2 is a "ertical central section on line Q' -2m"- Fig. 1.
3 is a plan View of the fireho".
p a horizontal section on lire t ot Fig. 1.
In carrying out the invention, I employ a base 2 which tapers towards its rear inar grin and is provided adjacent to its side margins with grooves 4 to receive the lower ends of two side wall slabs 6. which are provided at. their forward upper corners with oti'sets 8 in which a lintel it! is seated. The base 2 has an opening 5 normally clo ed by a pivotal id 7 and through which ashes ac cumulafing on said base 2 may be discharged into an underlyingash pit with which most cellars are provided.
The lintel 10 spans the upper forward portion of the fire-b0); and is provided at its under side with rearwardlv conver c in; grooves 12 to receive the. upper forward portions of the margins of the side wall slabs t. A longitudinal recess 13 is provided in the rear portion of the lintel 10 for directing. smoke to the chimney (not shown) instead of permitting it to escape into the room containing the fire-box.
The rear portion of the fire-box is closed by a back wall consisting of slabs l4 and 16. which latter slopes forwardly towards its ug'iper margin and is seated at its lower inarginnpon the slab 14. The slab 14- is seated in a groove 18 formed in the rear portion f the slab 2 and Communicating with the rearwardly converging grooves 4. T he back wall slabs 14; and 16 are firmly secured to the car margins of the side wall slabs -al le means such as stud bolts :20
" respectively.
covered by the lintel 10 and a hood 24 which latter is curved upwardly and rearwardly and if provideo at its .rearwardly convergdes with n'iarginal flanges 26 which 5. upon the upper margins of the side wall .i iaos 6 to which it is secured by suitable means such as stud bolts 28. The front margin of the hood 2% is seated in a rec ss 30 extending longitudinally of the rear upper portion of the lintel 10.
The rca r portion of the hood 21 has a fine opening for the escape of the products (.OZ'IllJ'iESiiOD and which is controlled by a .inpcr 32 rockably mounted in a groove 34 the upper margin of the hack slab 16. .e dan'ipcr 32- is controlled by a pivotally connected ratchet bar 36 which may he reached from the inner front portion of the liiQ-l)().. The ratchet bar 36 is adapted to he held at any point of its adjustment by a U-shaped bolt 38 secured to the upper portion of the hood 24.
in practice the fire-boX can be readily set up by unskilled workmen. the chief care being to get the base 2 properly positioned. The .0. wall slabs 6 are then placed in position. the grooves at acting as guides for proper placement of said slabs (3. The lintel 10 is then seated in the offsets 8 and its grooved portions 12 coact with the grooved portions 4 of the base 2 in firmly holding the side slabs 6 in upright position. The back wall slabs l4 and 1b are next placed in position. after which assembly of the tirebox is completed by placing the hood 2% in place. After the fire-box has been assem' bled above described it may be reinforced by laying one or more courses of brick or stone against the outer surface of the side wall slabs 6 and the rear wall. slabs 14 and 16.
Preferably. all excepting the metal parts of the fire-box are constructed of fire clay which can be readily molded into shape while in a plastic condition and then burned in kiln.
From the foregoing description it is apparent that l. have provided a fire-box em bod nc the advantages herein shown and de .JQtl. and while I have shown the preierred QlTibOdimGUt of the invention 1 reserve the right to such modifications and L hanges in the conslru lion, combination and :n'inngei'nent of parts as properly fall within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having l'hns (lPSFl'l Ql'l my invent-ion. \Vlldll Claim Zlflll (lOSll'P to secure by liellelis Patent, is:
A lii'P-lmx cunfiifiing of a have a rear wall mm! upon said base and having :in upper fonvznvlly sloping portinn, side walls seated upon said base and having uli'bcts in their upper m'wai'd POIUOHS, a li'n'tel seated in said olfsets and having a longitudinal recess in ils rear portion. an upwardly and rearwnully ('IUVGd hood resting at its lnnvni'd pm-tinn upon said lintel and having its rear nun-gin spaced above the upper margin of the war wall (0 leave an opening, and marginal flanges on said linlel which i'esl upon tin sicle walls of the lire box.
In testimony whereof I nlfix my signature,
HENRY G. TRIMBLE.
