L.. W. SCHALLER DAMPER FOR FIREPLACE? Filed June 6, 1925 LO'U'IES RV. SGHALEER, C91 PQETLANTD, Ollt-EGGN.
DAMPER FOB FIREPLACE-F3.
Application filed June 6, 1925.

v on: l'rlllli 2l()1'i'i?ll1 and a new and cit'zen oi: lln' n t-land in the cob iiitate of ilre'ron i useful l r f ireplaces, of which the following iiication.
h invention relates to dampers for iireplaces in which a horizontal ine iraine is built into the brick work of the and in which a (over is resting: loosely on the frame.
".lhe objects of my invention are to provide a construction which avoids the pivots between me and cover; which has the i on the top of the frame a d elds a more air tight joint. provi ions the retore 3' (E ther objects are to maize l 1g. H is an ei %vation of the front edge 0'! F1 I Fig. Ill illustrates the configuration of the pivoted edge of the COv'Ol. where the same rests on the frame.
Fig. ill shows a. iireplace in section with my invention in place.
Similar numerals'reifer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The frame consists of e horizontal base, the two side members-s l and the rear member "3 of which are n'iasoned into the brick work The vertical walls, cast inten 3 with the base, surroui'id the line opel'iii'ig. The upper edges of the two side walls l and the rear wall 5 slope down toward the jl rol'it wall 6 and support the cover 7. The front wall i5 is somewhat higher than the lowest point of the abutting side walls and thus prevents a sliding; of the cover 7. Besides a. suitable rein'l orcing rib S) on top of the cover 7, the underside of said cover, where it rests at the lowest point of the side walls 4:, is reinforced with two short halt Serial No. 35,291.
round ribs it) which rest in corresponding semi-circular notches 8 in said side walls. 'ihis half-round. rib takes the place of the pivot which in constructions of this kind usually extends from the cover into a hole in the side wall. round rib l0 prevents the cover from slid inn toward either side. Cast integrally with the vertical iront wall. 6 and the corre-portding base member are three or more cars 12, the upper edges of which are level ith the. upper ed e of the vertical front The so-called supporting bar 13 on cars 12 and the upper edge of e vert cal :lront wall 6 andv has downwardly extcndiiw' ears ll; which are fastened to the ears 12 of the frame by means of bolts 15. A. rearwardly extending projection 16 at the rear edge of the SHPPOliin bar PTQYGHJLTS the cover 7 from being sv. ling; to an extent where closing by gravb htion would fail to take place. The supiortingg' bar 13 furnishes a bench for the superimposed front brick wall 1.? and though the base at this point may be I warped by the heat of the fire, the inter veiling air space will keep the supporting bar 13 cool and straight and prevent cracks in said brick wall 17. The cover can be lifted by means of a chain 1.8 which is at tached near the rear edge of the cover and which extends thence through the front brick well.
Having thus described my invention it will be seen that my objects have been ac complished and though I have sh wn the preferred form of construction, I reserve to myself the right to make minor chang' providing it do not contravene the spi and principle of my invention.
l: claim:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of av frame comprising horizontal base members, and vertical walls at the inner edge of said base members, the vertical side walls and the rear wall sloping downwardly toward the front wall, a vertical front Wall rising; above the lowest point of the abutting side Walls, ears cast ii'itegrally with the vertical front wall and. the corresponding base member and extent upwardly to a level with the upper edge of the vertical front wall, a supporting bar resting; on the upper edge of said ears and being attached thereto, with it cover A. nose It on the halfresting freely on top of the side and rear walls and resting with the two front corners at the lowest point of the side walls.
In a device of the character described. the combination of a flat, horizontal frame, upwardly extending walls at the inner edge of the horizontal frame, the edges of the rear and side walls sloping downwardly from the rear toward the front a front wall extending above the lowest point of the side walls, a semicircular notch traversing each side wall at its lowest point, a plurality of upwardly extending ears cast integrally with the frame and the front wall and at right angles thereto, the upper edge of said ears being level with the upper edge of the front wall a supporting bar resting on the upper edges of the ears and the front walls, downwardly extending ears from the supporting bar bolted to the sides of the upwardly extending ears, a rearwardly extending projection from the rear edge of the supporting bar, and a flat cover resting freely on the top edges of the side walls and the rear wall, said cover having a reinforcing rib on the upper surface along the longitudinal center line, a half-round rib resting in the semicircular notch of the side Wall, and a ridge across the half-round rib at the inner side of the side wall.
Signed by me at Portland, Oregon, this 1st day of June, 1925.
LOUIS lV. SGHALLER.
