This invention relates to improvements in gas ranges and the particular feature of this application pertains to a swinging hood for the burner top of the range.

The particular type of range here shown is of the cabinet or low oven type though we wish it understood that the swinging cover construction can be used with other types of ranges without departing from our present improvement.

In the type of range here shown it is com-.

mon to have the flue outlet located at the rear of the-structure for the purpose of having the range located very close to the wall of the room, and it is necessary to have a specially. hinged cover that will not substantially project beyond the rear wall of the range.

I Other special features of the invention will appear fromthe following description.

By reference to the accompanying drawings it will be observed that the swinging cover 1 is provided with end flanges 7 and with a front flange 8, the said flange 8 being deeper than the flanges 7. It will also be' observed from the drawings that the burner top 2 is shown of a special construction, the special construction involving the downwardly and outwardly curved portions 9 and the over-lapping portion 10 and the burner construction 11 which is located under the top burner portion 2. I

These special constructions of the burner top and of the burners do not form any part of this improvement per so, as the same is made the subject matter of a separate application.

The flanges 7 of the cover have their front" ends formed in the ears 12 which are curved and meet the lower edge of the front flange 8 and these curved portions are made of the same contour and lie against the forwardly and outwardly curved portions 9 while the over-lapping portion 10 of the top 2 is wholly I enclosed within the cover when it is down.

Placed in these U shaped standards are wheels 19, one at each rear or'lower corner of the flanges 7 and the wheels rotate as they move up and down in these standards. There is a wheel 19 at each end of the flanges 7 of the cover 1 and these wheels are preferably connected by a transportion 2 and have their ends 23 extending below the said top portion. Carried by the extended portions 23' are suitable spiral springs 24 and spiral springs 25 which are located in pockets 26 which extend down- 'ward from the top portion 2. The object of the rods 21 is that when the top 1 is swung upwardly its rear lower edge will strike the springs 25 thus preventing the top from bumplng on the top portion 2 and the springs 24 at the lower ends of the rods 21 also prevent the front ends 12 from bumping on the curved portions 9. By means of thls construction the cover can move smoothly to either position without any disagreeable bumping of the parts.

It will also be observed that as the cover 1 is swung in either direction the lower corners 27 of the flanges 7 swing backward and forward and the rear corners 28 move up and down so that the top 1 when the cover is raised is substantially flush with the rear wall of the range and the front wall corner 27 moves rearward to a point substantially under the rear corner -28. When the cover is swung to vertical or open position then the corner 27 moves forward while the corner 28 moves downward so that the cover assumes the position shown inFigure 2. By means of this arrangement the flanged cover does not occupy any space whatever rear of the rear wall of the range so that the range can be placed close to the wall of the room containing it, leaving only suflicient room for the flue connection 13.

Changes can be made in the specific construction of the parts herein described without departing from the spirit of the inven- 1. A range having a top portion, a swinging cover therefor, the rear and lower end of the swinging cover adapted to move vertically and the lower front end to move horizontally, for the purpose described.

2. A range having a top burner portion and a swinging cover connected therewith 4. A range having a top burner portion and a swinging cover therefor, said cover having end flanges, the rear lower ends of the flanges guided to move vertically and the lower front ends of the flanges movable horizontally on the face of the topburner portion, for the purpose set forth.

5. A gas range comprising a top burner portion, a swinging cover connected with the top portion, said swinging cover having forwardly extending end flanges, upwardly extending standards located on the said top portion, the lower rear ends of the said flanges connected with the standards to move vertically and the lower front corners adapted to move laterally as the cover is raised or lowered.

6. A gas range comprising a burner top, a swinging cover; for the burner top havin orwardly extending end flanges, standar s extending vertically from the top portion, the lower rear corners of the flanges connected with the standards to slide vertically and the lower front corners of the flanges connected with the top portion to move laterally as the cover is moved up or down, for the purpose set forth.

7. A gas range comprising a top burner portion, a swinging cover having forwardly extendin flanges, standards extending upwardly rom the burner top and rollers adapted to slide thereon and the lower forward corners of the flanges provided with rollers adapted to engage the top portion, the parts operating as set forth.

' 8. A range comprising a to burner portion, a swinging top having orwardly extending end flanges, standards extending upwardly from the top portion, the standards being substantially U shaped, rollers embraced within the U sha ed ortion and the lower front corners of t li sliding connection with the said top portion, for the purpose set forth.

9. A range comprising a top burner por-' tion, a swinging cover having forwardly extending end flanges, means for guiding the lower rear corners of the flanges vertically e anges having a and the lower front corners back and forward, and vertical rods extendin substantially from the rear corners of t e flan es, said rods passing through the top portion and carrying springs located above and below the top portion, for the purpose of preventing bumpin of the cover when it is raised or lowere In testimony whereof we hereunto aflix our signatures.
