The invention relates generally to cook stoves employing gaseous or liquid fuel, and more particularly it relates to such stoves embodying means to conceal the various valve-operating handles when the stove is not in operation.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a stove having a closure plate adapted to close the forward side of the burner box, mounted for movement into a horizontal position within the lower portion of the burner box.
Another object is to provide a stove of this character having a sectionally formed drip pan, one section of which is adapted to be withdrawn from the burner box and utilized as a closure plate for the open front of the burner box.
Another object of the invention is to provide a stove embodying a sectional drip pan wherein one section may be moved into a vertical position in closing relation to the open front of the burner box, and having the two sections so related as to insure draining of liquids from the vertically positioned section onto the other section of the drip Another object is-to-provide a stove having a new and improved operating handle for the front closure plate of the burner box, arranged to facilitate movement of the plate into a completely concealed position within the burner box.

The preferred form of the invention herein illustrated is embodied in a cooking top 10 beneath which a burner box 11 is formed by front, side and rear walls 12, 13 and 14. A comparatively large rectangularopening 15 in the front wall 12 of the burner box provides for access to valve handles 16 (only one shown) located near the front of the burner box. Each valve handle 16 controls a valve 17 leading from a manifold 18 to one of the cooking burners (not shown). Between the valves 17 and their handles 16 an ornamental grille 19 may be mounted so as to conceal the valves 17, the grille 19 serving as a flame guard when used in a gas stove, and in order that the stove may simulate the appearance of a cabinet when not in use, closure'm'eans is provided to cover the opening 15 and conceal the valve handles 16. Such closure means may of course be of the same general appearance as the other panels on the forward wall of the stove whereby to secure symmetry in the stove design.
' In accordance with the present invention I plate 20, adapted to be seated in a rabbeted groove about the sides and top of the opening 15 as shown in full lines in Fig. 1, is mounted for pivotal movement, about its lower edge, to the horizontal open position shown in dotted outline in Fig. 1; also, it is arranged for slidingmovement through the lower portion of the opening 15 into the out of the way position shown in Fig. 2.
When in its horizontal position, the plate 20 extends across the forward portion of the burner box and preferably serves as one section of a drip pan 21 (Fig. 2) the remaining section of which is formed by a pan 22, upon the forward edge of which the plate 20 is pivoted at 23. By mounting the pan 22- for slidingmovement in guides 24 extending from front to rear in the burner box, the plate 20 is supported for both the pivotal and translatory movement required in the accomplishinent of its two functions. It will be seen in Fig. 2 of the drawing that the plate 20 slides along the guide 24, and in order to prevent injury to the enameled surface of the plate, the guides 24 are provided with longitudinally extending ribs 25, the rounded upper surfaces of which provide a minimum resistance to the movement of the plate 20 thereon.
Taken together, the pan 22 and the closure late 20 serve to cover the entire area of the urner box when in the positions shown in Fig. 2, and both the plate and the pan are flanged upwardly as shown at 26 and 27 so as to retain liquids or the like which may fall thereon. In order that such liquids may be drained into the pan 22 when the plate 20 is moved to its vertical position, the pivoted edge of the plate 20 is formed with an S- shaped bend to provide a recess 28 (Fig. 4) into which the forward edge of the pan 22 may project, and the pivot between the two parts is located within the recess 28 as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. Thus the S-formation of the pivoted edge of the plate 20 provides a flange 29 which covers the space between the plate and the pan and prevents liquids or the like from passing downwardly between these two sections. This flange 29 and its associated parts also serve to cause any fluid on the plate 20 to be drained rearwardly of the stove into the pan 22 when the plate is raised to its closed position shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. At the other side of the recess 28 the S- formation of the edge of the plate provides a second flange 30 which, when the plate is in its vertical position, serves to conceal the forward edge of the pan 22 (Figs. 1 and 4).
Due to the particular formation of the pivoted edge of the plate 20 a special form of hinge is provided consisting of a bar 31 (Fig. 3) secured to each side flange 26 of the closure plate 20 and projecting across the end of the recess 28. Through each bar 31 and the adjacent side flange 27 of the drip pan a pin 32 projects to form the pivotal connection.
To hold the closure plate 20 in its closing relation to the opening 15 a latch 33 is pivotally mounted on the inner side of the plate 20 adjacent to lt upper edge and is arranged to engage the inner side of the wall 12 as shown in Fig. 1. The latch 33 is operated by a handle 34 carried by an angular arm 35 connected to the latch. The arm 35 projects forwardly through a notch 36 formed in the plate 20 and is arranged so that the handle 34 may project from the plate 20 forwardly from the stove when the plate is in either of its two positions. Thus the handle construction permits the plate to be moved rearwardly beyond the forward face of the stove as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawin When the upper edge of the plate is held in position by the latch 33, a detent 37 preferably acts on the pan 22 to holdthe lower edge of the plate 20 in place. The detent 37 is formed of sheet metal and is pivoted on the guide 24 (Figs. 1, 5 and 6) and projects over and downwardly from the guide 24 so as to be engageable with the rear flange 27 of the drip pan 22 to limit forward movement of the pan. By beveling the forward edge of the detent 37 as indicated at 38, the detent is rendered ineffective to prevent movement of the pan inwardly of the burner box. To remove the plate 20 and the pan 22 from the stove for cleaning, the two detents 37, which are accessible through the cooking top 10, are elevated to the position shown in dotted outline in Fig. 1, whereupon the plate 20 and the pan 22 may be withdrawn through the opening 15. v
From the foregoing it will be apparent that the present invention provides a stove construction wherein the uniformity and beauty of appearance is maintained while the stove is in use through the employment of a front closure plate which is moved to a substantially concealed position when the stove is in use. This desirable end is attained without loss of space in the stove, and by causing the closure plate to serve the additional function of a drip pan, the amount of metal required for the stove is reduced. The form of the hinge joint employed between the closure plate and the drip pan insures collection of all of the waste in the drip pan.
I claim as my invention:
1. A cooking stove having a burner box with an open front, a closure for said open front, and a drip pan in said box pivotally supporting said closure.
2. A cooking stove having a burner box with an opening in the front thereof, a closure plate adapted to close said opening or to be moved into said burner box through the lower portion of said opening, and a drip pan within said burner box supporting said closure plate for pivotal opening movement and for movement into the burner box.
3. A cooking stove having a burner box with an opening in the front thereof, a closure plate adapted to close said opening or to be moved into said burner box through the lower portion of said opening, a drip pan slidable from front to rear in said burner box, and means pivotally supporting said plate on the forward edge of said pan.

In a cooking stove having a burner box with an opening in the front thereof, the combination of a drip pan slidable from front to rear in said burner box, a plate pivoted to the forward edge of said drip pan and movable from a vertical position wherein it closes said opening to a horizontal position within the burner box wherein it serves as a forward continuation of the drip pan, and a flange on said plate extending over the forward edge of said drip an to drain liquids from said plate onto sai pan when the plate is moved to its vertical position. v I
5. A stove of the character disclosed having a burner box with an opening in one side thereof, a drip pan in said box slidable toward and away from said opening, a
closure plate for said opening pivoted at its lower edge to the adjacent edge of said pan and movable through said opening into said burner box to form a continuation of said drip pan, and means to prevent downwardly dropping liquid or the like from passing between the adjacent edges of the drip pan and closure plate.
6. A cookin stove having a burner box with an open rout, a closure for said open front adapted to be moved to a horizontal position and into said burner box, a slidable drip pan within'said burner box, a bent portion on said closure plate along its lower edge forming a recess opening downwardly of said closure plate and into which the for.- ward edge of said drip pan may project, and means ivoting'saiddrip pan to said closure plate or movement about an axis located within said recess.
7. A cooking stove having a burner box including a forward wall with an opening therein, a drip pan slidable from front to rear in said burner box, a closure plate for covering said opening, said closure plate along its lower edge being formed with an S-shaped bend providing a downwardly opening recess extending along the lower edge of the closure plate, a bar on each side of said closure plate extending across theends of said recess, said drip pan having its forward edge extending into said recess, and means pivotally connecting said bars to said drip pan for movement about a pivotal axis located within said recess.
8. In a stove of the character disclosed, the combination of a burner box having an opening in one side thereof, a closure plate for means supporting said covering said opening, closure plate at its lower edge for plvotal movement and for a movement of translation into a horizontal position within said burner box, and guides for supporting said plate in such a movement of translation, said guides having longitudinally extending ribs formed tliereon to engage thesurface of said closure ate. p 9. A stove of the character disclosed having a burner box including a forward wall with an opening therein, a closure plate for said opening, means supporting the lower edge of said closure plate for pivotal movement and for sliding movement through said opening into a horizontal position with the burner box, a latch at the upper edge of said plate for engaging said wall to hold the plate in closing relation to said opening, and a handle, for operating said latch and moving said plate, pivoted to and arranged to project from said plate forwardly of the stove when said plate is in either its vertical closing position or its horizontal position within the burner box.
