My'invention relates to an improvedv door for broiler drawers in cooking ranges.
Porcelain. enamelled fronts on cooking ranges are, in accordance with recent trends in design, made up of oven ldoors and utility drawers and other panels, allwith their fronts substantially flush with one another and with their edges in closely spaced' relation.- It has often been noticed how the lower edge portions of oven doors Yori-franges Aof such design become s'cu'ed and chipped where the clearance is not quite sufcientfor the doons to open without scraping on the upper edge portions of whatever panels are immediately beneath. The doors on broiler drawers presented a still greater problem because ofthe way they are, of necessity, hinged on the drawersto swing down` to a position with the -inner surface on a level with the bottom of the drawer. As a result unless the housewife took [special precautions to pull the drawer out part way beforemswinging. the door down, the lower edge of thefdoor rode more or less solidly on. the upper edge vof the panel beneath, with resulting strong likelihood of damageto both contacting parts. The door alsohad to be closed before the drawer was pushed in or even worse damage was apt to result, especially if the drawer was movedin with any appreciable speed. It is, therefore,the principal object of my invention to' provide a door for a broiler drawer which is equippedwith means for positively spacing the door and drawer front outwardly relative to the range beforethe door can be swung down, the said meansY functioning to protect the door and adjacent parts of the range front alike inthe opening andclosing of the door.
The broiler drawer in accordance with my invention has the door hinged thereon, and the door is oper-atively connected by a link with one end ofa kick-out plate vpivoted intermediate its ends 'to the side of the drawer and having a lateral projectionA on its other end slidably engaging the front of the range frame alongside the 'broiler `oven compartment, whereby as the door is swung down the kick-out plate is turned and causes the drawer to be moved outwardlyfar enough for the door to have its lower edge clear the front of ,the range'.` The kick-out plate also has another lateral projection intermediate its ends and in radially spaced relation to the pivot which is arranged to engage a stop on the side of the drawer to limit turning of the plate and accordingly limit outward swinging movement of the door so as to support the same in a substantially horizontal position extending outwardly from the drawer.

Whitehead, Harold H. Ring and John F. Hennessy, Serial Nos 307,215, filed December 2, 1939, and 348,126, filed July 29, 1940, respectively. The broiler compartment 9 contains an open front drawer n9a having opposed side walls I1 and I8 interconnected by a bottom wall I9, the side walls having integral horizontal ribs 2! thereon for the support of a broiler pan 2| at any one of a plurality of levels. The pan 2l contains a removable grill 22. The front end of the drawer is reinforced by a U- shaped metal band 2lil which extends beneath the front edge of the bottom wall I9 and upwardly along the front edge of both the side walls Il and I8. The drawer 9a and broiler `compartment 9 are provided with suitable intertting drawerguides (not shown) in order that the drawer may be veasily moved outwardly and inwardly. The indicia at 24 in Fig. 1 serves to designate different levelsof the setting of the pan ZI in the broiling of different foods.
Sheet metal brackets 25 have attaching ears 26 bent therefrom in opposite directions. These vbrackets are spaced inwardly from the side and.

Projecting lears 28 on the brackets 25 are pivotally secured to the reenforcement band 23 on the drawer 9a by rivets 29, so' that the door II is hinged to the drawer 9a and may be swung upwardly and downwardly from the open and closed positions, thereby serving as a front wall for the drawer 9a and as a closure for the broiler compartment 9.
Links 3| are pivotally secured at one end to struck out ear portions 32 of the brackets 25 by rivets 33 while the opposite ends are pivotally connected to one end of kick-out plates or levers 34 by rivets 35. The levers 34 are each pivotally mounted by a struck-in intermediate portion 35 on the band 23 by a bolt 3B at a point above the rivet 29. This pivotal mounting of the levers 34 spaces all but the struck-in portions 35 thereof from the band 23, thereby reducing friction therebetween in the movements of the levers 34. For rigidity, the levers 34 have outwardly bumped, reinforcement ribs 31 extending longitudinally thereof. Outwardly projecting knobs 33 are mounted on struck-out portions 39 on the free ends of levers 34. These knobs are arranged to slidably engage vertical side rails 4| on the front frame of the range on opposite sides of the broiler compartment 9 so that when the door is opened and the levers 34 are turned, the knobs 38 bearing against the posts 4| cause the drawer 9a to be moved automatically outwardly in the proper timed relation with the opening of the door so that the lower edge portion I4 of the door will not ride on the upper edge portion 42 of the range front panel 43 therebeneath.
Figs. 2 to 5 show the relationship between the bottom edge I4 of the door and the upper edge 42 of an adjacent panel 43 at the various stages of opening. Incorporating the kick-out 3 feature through which the drawer 9a is automatically moved outwardly as the door is opened permits the desired close spacing between the door and the adjacent panel 43, as shown in Fig. 2, while rubbing and scraping between these two parts is avoided when the door 4 is opened, as is evident from Figs. 3 to 5. Obviously, if the drawer 9a is pulled outwardly without opening the door |,'the necessary clearance between the door edge |4 and panel edge 42 will be maintained. Furthermore, if the drawer 9a is pushed in from a pulled out position while the door is still open, the knobs 38 will strike the rails 4| and prevent contact of the edge |4 of the door with the panel 43, thus avoiding any possibility of damage to the range by reason of careless operation of the broiler drawer.
An inwardly projecting knob 44 is provided on each of the levers 34, intermediate the ends thereof and in radially spaced relation to the pivot 36, for engagement with the rear edges of band 23 when the door reaches horizontal position, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the levers 34 being thus held against further clockwise movement to support the door in the open position.
The door is held releasably in closed position by detent means comprising rollers 45 rotatably mounted on pins 46 carried on the free ends of leaf springs 41 that are fastened to the brackets 25 by rivets 48. Openings 49 are provided in the brackets 25 for the projection therethrough of the rollers 45 to enter other openings 5| in the band 23 when the door is in the closed position. As the door approaches closed position, the rollers 46 ride over the front edges of the band 23, causing the leaf springs 41 to be ilexed outwardly so that when the rollers drop into the openings 5| they are held therein under spring tension to hold the door closed well enough to prevent accidental opening thereof.
It is believed the foregoing description conveys a good understanding of my invention, and while the invention is here disclosed as applied specically to cooking ranges for the broilers thereof, it should be clear that it may be applied to other cabinet structures also, wherever a drawer having a hinged front presents need for automatic kick-out of the drawer as the door is opened.
I claim:
1. In combination, a drawer having opposed upright side walls and an open front end, an open cabinet compartment wherein said drawer is movably mounted, a door for closing the front end of the drawer and to serve as a closure for the cabinet compartment pivotally mounted on the lower front portion of said drawer on a substantially horizontal axis, a link pivotally connected at one end to the door in radially spaced relation to the hinge axis, a lever pivotally mounted intermediate its ends on one of the side Walls of the drawer in radially spaced relation to the hinge axis, one end of said lever being pivotally connected with the other end of said link so as to be turned when the door has pivotal movement about its hinge axis, and a laterally outwardly projecting knob on the other end of said lever, said knob bearing against the front end of the cabinet as the lever is turned when the door is opened, whereby to cause the drawer to be moved outwardly.
2. 'Ihe combination set forth in claim 1, including a laterally inwardly projecting knob on said lever in radially spaced relation to the pivot for said lever to engage an abutment provided on the side wall of the drawer when the door reaches the limit of its opening movement, whereby to support the door in open position.
3. A structure as set forth in claim 1, including means for limiting turning of said lever, whereby to limit opening of said door.
4. The combination with a cabinet having a compartment, of a door support movable relative to the cabinet, a door closing the front of said compartment and hinged on said support on a substantially horizontal axis, opposed links pivotally connected at one end to opposite sides of the door in radially spaced relation to the hinge axis, opposed elongated lever members pivotally mounted intermediate their ends on said door support in radially spaced relation to the hinge axis, one end of each of said lever members being pivotally connected with the other end of the associated one of said links, and outwardly extending knobs on the other ends of said lever members moved relative to the door support when the door has pivotal movement about its hinge axis, said knobs bearing against the front of said cabinet as the lever members are turned when the door is opened, whereby said door and its supportl are moved outwardly relative to the cabinet.
5. A cabinet structure as set forth in claim 4, including means for limiting turning of said lever members whereby to limit opening of the door.
6. In a cabinet having a compartment, a front frame and enamelled front panels, a drawer for said compartment, a door panel hinged thereon at the front thereof having a handle for openin". and closing the same, said door panel also being enamelled to match the other front panels and in closed position being disposed substantially in contiguous relation with the other panels with its front face substantially iiush with the front faces of said other panels, the contiguous relationship prohibiting free swinging movement oi the door panel with the drawer all of the way in the compartment, and means acting between the drawer and front frame operable by the door in a swinging movement thereof for automatically moving the drawer outwardly a predetermined distance relative to said compartment.
7. A cabinet structure as set forth in claim 6, wherein said last mentioned means includes means acting between the door and drawer for limiting opening movement of the door, whereby to supportl said door in open position.
8. In combination, a cabinet, a drawer therein having a hinged door on the front thereof, and means operable by the door in its opening swinging movement for simultaneously automatically expelling the drawer a predetermined distance from the cabinet.
9. The combination with a cabinet having a compartment, of a door for closing the front of said compartment, hinge means mounted on said door, door supporting means slidable in said compartment on which said hinge means are mounted, lever means pivotally connected to said door and said slidable door supporting means so as to be turned in the swinging of the door, one portion of said lever means engaging said cabinet to cause said slidable door supporting means to move outwardly from the compartment when the door is opened.
10. In combination, a drawer having opposed upright side walls and an open iront end, an open cabinet compartment, wherein said drawer is movably mounted, a door for closing the front end of the drawer and to serve as a closure for the cabinet compartment pivotally mounted on the lower front portion of said drawer on a substantially horizontal axis, a lever pivotally mounted intermediate its ends on one of the side walls of the drawer in radially spaced relation to the hinge axis, one end of said lever being operatively connected with the door so that the lever is turned when the door has pivotal movement about its hinge axis, and a laterally outwardly projecting knob on the other end of said lever, said knob bearing against the front end of the cabinet when the lever is turned when the door is opened, whereby to cause the drawer to be moved outwardly.
11. The combination with a cabinet having a compartment, of a door support movable relative to the cabinet, a door closing the front of said compartment and hinged on said support on a substantially horizontal axis, -opposed Ielongated lever members pivotally mounted intermediate their ends on said door support in radially spaced relation to the hinge axis, one end of each of said lever members being operatively connected with the door so that the lever members arev turned when the door has pivotal movement about its hinge axis, and outwardly extending knobs on the other ends of said lever members arranged to bear against the front of said cabinet when the lever members are turned when the door is opened, whereby said door and its support are moved outwardly relative to the cabinet.
l2. The combination set forth in claim 10, including a laterally inwardly projecting knob on said lever in radially spaced relation to the pivot for said lever arranged to engage an abutment provided on the side wall of the drawer when the door reaches the limit of its opening movement, whereby to support the door in open position.
13. A structure as set forth in claim 10, including means for limiting turning of said lever, whereby to limit opening of said door.
14. A structure as set forth in claim 11, including means for limiting turning of said lever members, whereby to limit opening of the door.
l5. The combination with a cabinet having a compartment, of a door support movable inwardly and outwardly relative to the cabinet compartment, a door hinged on said support serving as a closure for said compartment, and door support expelling means operable by the door and acting between the door support and the cabinet in the swinging movement of the door toward open position positively to cause outward movement of said support relative to the compartment.
16. The combination with a cabinet having a compartment, of a door support movable inwardly and outwardly relative to the cabinet compartment, a door hinged on said support serving as a closure for said compartment, and door support expelling means operable by the door in the swinging movement thereof toward open position arranged to engage a portion of the cabinet and to move in one direction in timed relation to the opening of the door, whereby positively to cause outward movement of said support relative to the compartment, said door support expelling means being movable in the opposite direction relative to the cabinet when the door is swung toward closed position, whereby to permit return movement of said door support into the compartment.
17. The combination with a cabinet having a compartment, of a door constituting a closure f for said compartment, hinge meanson said door,
door supporting means slidable in said compartment and supporting the hinge means thereon for slidable support of the door, and means operable by the door in the opening movement thereof pivotally mounted on the slidable door supporting means and engageable with the cabinet to move the slidable door supporting means 18. In combination, a cabinet having a compartment, the front of said cabinet being recessed adjacent the compartment, a door for closing said compartment adapted to lit in said recess, hinge means mounted on said door, door supporting means slidable in said compartment on which said vhinge means are mounted, and means acting between the door supporting means and the recessed front of said cabinet operable by the door in an opening movement thereof for automatically moving the door with the door supporting means bodily outwardly a predetermined distance relative to said compartment.

In combination, a cabinet having a compartment, the front of said cabinet being recessed adjacent the compartment, an enameled front door panel fitting in said recess to close said compartment and having a handle for opening and closing the same, hinge means mounted on said door panel, door supporting means slidable in said compartment on which said hinge means are mounted, and means acting between the door supporting means and the cabinetffront operable by the door in an opening movement thereof for vautomatically moving the door supporting means and door bodily outwardly a predetemined distance relative to said compartmen J OHN F.
