POCKETED TABLE.
Application filed February 15, 1923, Serial No. 619,283.
This invention relates to improvements in pocketed tables, and the object thereof is to provide a table that may be folded and concealed in a cabinet installed in the'wall of an apartment, or, that may be secured to the wall so as to occupy a minimum of space in the apartment. in many modern living apartments the rooms are more or less limited in size and the occupants are frequently hamlo pered by the presence of tables of usual construction, and it is an object of the present improvement to provide a table of adequate dimensions that may be easily and quickly disposed of and the space ordinarily occupied by the table thus rendered available for other purposes when the use of the table is not required.
These objects are accomplished by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective View of a construction embodying the invention and showing the table extended for use;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the table and its cabinet in open position;
Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the table folded into the cabinet; and
Fig. 1- is a detail front view of the adjustable leg for supporting the outer end of the table, when extended.
The characters appearing in the description refer to parts shown in the drawings and designated thereon by corresponding characters.
: The invention comprises a cabinet 1, the
front of which has a panel 2 that has an angular lid 3 hinged to its upper edge, which lid, when closed extends over the-top of the cabinet. The panel is permanently secured to the sides 4 and bottom f the cabinet and closes the front thereof.
Projecting from the inner face of each side 4: of the cabinet is a vertically disposed slat 6 spaced from the panel 2, and also a stop 7 at the upper end of the space 9 therebetween. A sliding rectangular frame 8 is mounted in the cabinet with its'sides extending respectively between the corresponding slats and the panel 2 and is adapted to have vertical movement in the guides formed by the spaces CTI 9. which movement is limited at the upper 1 end of the cabinet by the stops 7. A table top consisting of two sections 10 and 11 having a hinged connection 12 at their adjacent ends is positioned with its section 10 extending over the panel 2 into the cabinet and with its extreme inner end extending under a cross beam 13 in the rear upper end of the cabinet. Also, the top section 10 has a hinge connection 14 upon its lower face, adjacent its inner end, with the top part 8 of the sliding frame 8. The top section 11 has a h nge connection 15 on its lower face, near its outer end, with a support 16 that has a sliding extension leg 17, there being a spring latch 18 on the-support for engaging the leg and holding it in its extended position.
In utilizing the invention the cabinet is positioned in the wall of a building, or against the wall, andis secured permanently in place with its front exposed to view.
When the table is in position for use, the lid 3 depends from its hinges l9 and rests against the front of the panel 2, and the top section 10 of the table is sustained in horizontal position by the cross beam 13 and the top of the panel between, which the rear por-' tion of the section extends. The outer section 11 of the table top is sustained in horizontal position by the folding support 16, and
the outer end of the inner section with which it has hinged connection. Theleg 17 is moved ifzlo its extended position so as to bear upon the oor.
When thus positioned the table is held from moving outwardly from the cabinet by'the' sliding frame 8, and is prevented from sagging downwardly at its hinged connection 12 with the outer section by the top of the panel 2 which acts as a fulcrum for the section 10. The sliding frame 8 also prevents the table top from having lateral movement.
WVhen use of the table is not required, the spring latch 18 is draw-n outwardly and the leg is slid up into the support which is then folded fiat against the lower face of the section 11, and the section 11 is folded over onto the section 10. The outer end of the top section 10 is then raised sufficiently to permit the folded sections and support to be lowered, together with the sliding frame, into the cabinet through the top thereof. The lid 3 is then swung up into closed position over the top of the cabinet, thus concealing the movable parts entirely from view.
An especial feature of the invention is the swinging movement of the inner section 10, the inner end portion of which, through its engagement with the panel top and cross beam, is estopped thereby, when the top reaches its horizontal position.
What I claim is:
1. A pocketed table structure comprising a wall cabinet with an opening at its top and.
upper front portion; a frame in the cabinet having vertical sliding movement therein; a table top having hinged connection with said sliding frame, and disposed so that the rear end of the top is stopped by the rear upper part of the cabinet, and that portion of the top adjacent the front of said frame has bearing on the top of the front portion of the cabinet when the top is horizontally positioned; and an angular cover for the top and upper front portion of the cabinet hinged to the front of the cabinet so as to depend beneath the table top when said table top is in extended position, said table top being held from lateral tilting movement by said frame.
2. In a pocketed table structure, a Wall cabinet having an opening in its top and upper front portion; a frame having guided vertical sliding movement within said cabinet adjacent the front thereof; a table top I hinged to the top of said frame at a point on AUGUSTUS F. XVASMUTH.
