Description

PATENTED MAY 8, 1906.
s. BENDER. FIREPLACE. APPLICATION FILED DEG. I 1904.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FIREPLACE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 8, 1906;
Application filed December 1, 1904. Serial No. 234,989.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL BENDER, a subject of the Czar of Russia, and a resident of Shreveport, Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fireplaces, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to improvements in fireplaces; and it consists of the novel features herein shown, described, and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective showing a single firep ace in a sin le cabin. Fig. 2 1s a vertical cross-section o the fireplace and foundation shown in Fig. 1 and taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3 and looking in the direction indicated by the arrow. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2 and looking downwardly, as indicated by the arrow.
In some arts of the country, especially in the South, 1t is customary to construct portable cabins to be used by the field-hands on the large plantations and to be moved from place to place as the work progresses from one part of the plantation to another, and in these cabins it is usual to employ fireplaces instead of stoves.
It is my object to construct a light efficient fireplace for use in these portable cabins. It is obvious that brick or stone fireplaces are not well suited for the portable cabins on account of their weight and the liability of their falling down in transit.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the side walls 6 and 7 and the forwardly-curved back wall 8 are arranged in the form of a square or rectangle, and the hood 9 is mounted u on these walls, there being a chimney 10 leading upwardly from the center of the hood. An opening is formed in the side of the cabin, and the fireplace is mounted outside of the cabin in registration with this opening, there being flanges 11 and 12 extending outwardly from the forward edges of the sides 6 and 7 to engage the inner face of the side wall of the cabin. Channel- bars 13 and 14 connect the sides 6 and 7 near their lower edges, said channel-bars being mounted with their smooth sides upwardly and said smooth sides being on a level with the floor 15 of the cabin. A lining comprising the sides 16 and 17 to the forwardly-curved back 18 is placed in the fireplace upon the bars 13 and 14, there being flanges 19 and 20 extending outwardly from the forward edges of the sides 16 and 17 against the flanges 11 and 12, so as to form an air-chamber 21 between the walls 6 and 16, 7 and 17, and 8 and 18. The backs 18 of the fireplaces are forwardly curved for the purpose of deflecting the heat into the room, curved backs will do, as has been demonstrated. The back wall 8 is correspondingly curved in order that the air-space 21 may closely follow the said forwardly-curved backs of the fireplaces, and thereby form a directly-curved passage for the air back of the ,fireplaces. The space between and below the channel- bars 13 and 14 is filled with earth or cindcrs 22, so as to form a base for the fire within the lining and so that when the cabin is to be moved this base may be dropped and left.
I claim The improved metallic fireplace, comprising the slde walls, 6 and 7, the forwardlycurved back wall, 8, a tapered hood mounted at the upper end of said forwardly-curved wall, the chimney mounted upon said hood, the fireplace sides 16 and 17 extending parallel with the said side walls 6 and 7, and the forwardly-curved fireplace-back 18, con forming to the curve of the said curved back wall, 8, and connectin said sides 16 and 17 substantially as speci ed.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
. SAMUEL BENDER.
