CORNELIUS L. TAYLOR, OF SOARBRO, WEST VIRGINIA.
FIREPLACE Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 24, 1908.
Patented July 6, 1909.
Serial No. 417,544.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CORNELIUS L. TAY- LOR, citizen of the United States, residing at Scarbro, in the county of Fayette and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fireplaces, of which the following is a specification.
, The resent invention relates to a fire place W ich may be set up without cement or mortar joints, thereby admitting of the same being taken apart for any purpose whatsoever.
The improvement consists of a sectional fire place composed of tiles or slabs having interlocking joints at their meeting parts, the several tiles or slabs being self-sustaining when placed in osition.
For a full unrierstanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction and the means for effecting the result, reference is to be had to the following description and accom anying drawings.
Whi e the invention may be adapted to different forms and conditions by changes in the structure and minor details Without departin from the spirit or essential features thereo, still the preferred embodiment is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fire place embodying the invention; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the top section of the ack Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the lower section of the back; Figs. 4 and 5 are perspective views, respectively, of the top and lower sections of one side, and Figs. 6 and 7 are perspective views, respectively, of the lower and top sections of the opposite side of the fire place.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following descri tion and indicated in the several views of t e drawings by the same reference characters.
The fire place is adapted to be built i toa chimney in the well known manner an is placed upon a hearth of any material and comprises a back and sides. Each side consists of a lower section 1 and an up r section 2, the two sections being connecte by means of a tongue and groove oint. The back consists of a lower section 3 and an upper section 4, a. tongue and groove joint being provided between the two sections. The upper section 4 inclines forwardly at its upper edge so as to overhang the grate and throw the heat outward. The upper secti0ns2 of the sides have their rear edges inclined to correspond to the inclination of the upper back section 4.
The section 3 is provided nearits vertical edges with openings 5 to receive projections 6 at the rear vertical edges of the lower sections 1. The upper section 4 of the back is provided near its vertical edges with openings 7 wh1ch are adapted to receive projections 8 at the inclined edges of the sections 2. l'Vhen the parts are assembled, the tongue and groove joints between the sections 1 and 2 prevent relative lateral displacement of said sections, whereas the interlocking joints formed by the openings 5 and 7 and the projections 6 and 8, serve to hold the back and sides in proper position. The lower sections 1 and 3 are of like height.
From the foregoing, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, it will be understood that the fire place is adapted to be erected and form a substantial structure without recourse to cement or I'nortar joints and any parts may be removed for any purpose, as the interlocking joints are such as to readily admit of the parts being separated.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
A fire-place constructed of tiles of refractory material and comprising a back and sides, the back consisting of a lower section having its top edge grooved and openings near its ends, and a top section having a tongue at its lower edge, fitting the groove of the lower section and having openings near its ends, said top section being forwardly inclined, and each side comprising a lower section formed with projections at its rear vertical edge to enter the openings near the ends of the lower back section and having a groove in its top edge, and an upper section having a tongue at its lower edge fittedinto the groove of the lower section and having its rear edge inclined and formed with projections to enter the openings near the ends of the u per back section.
In testimony wliereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CORNELIUS L. TAYLOR.
