Description

S. PIERCE.

No. 38,982. Patented June-2'3, 1 863.
w/f/v's sis:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL PIERCE, OF TROY, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN RANGES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 38,952, dated June 23, 1863; antedated April 29, 1863.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL PIERCE, of the city of Troy, county of Rensselaer, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Kitchen-Ranges; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exactdescription of the same, reference being hereby had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which drawings make a part of this specification.
Like letters represent and refer to like and corresponding parts.
Figure 1 shows the range in condition for use. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the center from front to rear and on the line of 1, Fig. 3. Fig. 3 is a vertical section lengthwise of the range and the line of m, Fig. 2. Fig. 4. is a top view on the line of :20, Fig. 2.
The nature of my improvement consists in the employment and combination of a reservoir and feeder to hold and supply coal to the fire chamber at or near the rear end of the saidphamber and between the ovens of the range, so that a continuous and regular supply of coal is had as combustion is carried on in the fire box or chamber by means thereof.
To enable others to make and use my improved kitchen-range, I will here proceed to describe the construction and operation of the same, which is as follows, to wit I construct a reservoir and supply-feeder, a, Figs. 1 and 2, of iron of any strength desired, and in width the same as that of the fire box or chamber to be supplied with coal. I place this reservoir and feeder at or near the back part of the range, as seen at Fig. 2, which is of any height or capacity required. The coal is admitted to this reservoir through the door 1" at the top thereof, Figs. 2 and 3, which is then closed perfectly tight.
5- Figs. 2, 3, and 4, is fire-brick back, somewhat in the form of a triangle with an upper concave surface, and serves to guide the coal as it passes into the fire-chamber d. This brick back extends the full width of the said fire-chamber.
f Figs. 2, 3, and 4, is a water-back, having tubes extending in each direction, as seen atp This back extends the 'When the coal in the said fire-chamber d is consumed and reduced to ashes, by shaking the fire-grate o, the ashes fall from the said chamber and fresh coal enters therein fromthe said reservoir and feeder in an ignited state, and thus combustion goes on in an even and perfect manner. The draft is controlled by the ordinary dampers in the front doors, or dampers in the smoke-pipes.
Having thus described my improvements in ranges, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
The supplying of the fire-chamber d, at the rear end thereof, by means of the reservoir and feeder a, in combination with the triangle concave fire-brick back b and the fire-chamber d, in the manner substantially as herein de- 7 scribed and set forth.
In testimony whereof I have, on this 26th day of September, 1862, hereunto set my hand.
MARCUS P. NORTON, I. T. O. GoonFELLow.
