NEWSPAPER GOVE'R. No. 449,210. Patented Mar. 31, 1891.
WITNESSES 0?? MM/ 1/ 1 I 77% a??? YWM UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
JOSEPH DAVIS, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
NEWSPAPER-COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. M9310, dated March 31, 1891.
Application filed August 12, 1890. Serial No. 361,829. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPH DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Covers and Files for Newspapers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eX- act description of the same.
My'invention relates to the class of covers and files for periodicals generally, but more especially adapted for newspapers and other similar circulating publications found in public places, such as hotels, steamboats, railwaytrains, and reading-rooms.
My invention consists in a cover or file composed of two leaves anda connecting or back portion made of any suitable material with advertisements displayed thereon, and having an opening inits front adapted to expose the title or heading of the publication it contains.
The objects of my invention are, first, to produce a universal cover for newspapers, periodicals, or books with or without paper covers, to indicate the name or title and date of such publication on the outer page of such newspapers, periodicals, or books, respectively, without opening the cover of such pub lication or printing the title on my universal cover; second, to do away with the necessity of setting up and printing the advertisements displayed on the cover at each new issue anew.
By this means the necessity of opening the cover to ascertain whether the paper Wanted is contained within is avoided, as I make the title or heading of the newspaper or publication itself designate this immediately by exposing it through the opening in the cover. These covers are printed in quantity and of various sizes to fit publications of different dimensions with the slots or openings therein, and are applied to such publications after issue in the usual way and manner.
Referring to the accompanying drawings for a more complete explanation of my invention, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my cover, showing its opening, which exposes the title of the contained paper. Figs. 2 and 3 are views showing modified forms of openings.
The cover orfile A may be made of any suitable material, and consists of a front and a back leaf, and a back or connecting portion 1), uniting the leaves along one edge, between which leaves the newspaperor other publication is to be secured. It may be applied in any suitable manner.
In the front of the cover is made an opening slot or slit to of any suitable shape, and through this opening thetitle or heading B of the contained publication is seen.
Upon the cover are to be printed various ad'- vertisements. Now it will be seen that the newspapers or publications to which my covers are applied can be as readily distinguished from each other in public places as if they had no covers, and yet said papers are made to circulate the advertising matter of the covers with which I provide them in a cheaper and more rapid manner, and in many cases can be used for a long period of time without changing the matter thereon.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A cover or tile for newspapers and other circulating publications, consisting of two leaves and a back orconnecting portion uniting said leaves along one edge, said leaves be- JOSEPH DAVIS. [L.
