APPARATUS FOR WATERlNG HOGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 448,262, dated March 17, 1891.

Be it known that I, GEORGE F. RUNNELS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waco, in the county of York and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for lVatering Hogs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in apparatus for use in watering hogs and other animals; and it consists in the peculiar construction and in the novel combination, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, like letters of reference indicating like parts throughout the several views, and in which drawings- Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, through a hog-watering deviceconstructed in accordance with myinvention, the valve in the inlet-pipe being shown as closed. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation thereof, the valve being shown as opened. Fig. is a transverse section through the float, showing the adj ustable plate which contacts with the valve-rod.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the inletpipe, and B the watering tank or trough.
C is aplate secured to the inner face of the side wall of the tank and covering the end of the inlet-pipe, as shown. A valve D is hinged at one of its edges to the rear face of the plate 0, the body portion of the valve covering an aperture d in the plate. A spiral spring E is sleeved upon a rod F, one end of the rod being provided with a suitable bearing-plate F, which rests upon the rear face of the valve, while the other end of said spring bears against the arm G of the bracket or support G, which extends from the rear face of the plate 0, and forms a support for the outer end of the rod F. The rod F has one of its ends secured to the outer face of the valve D, and its opposite end, which extends for a short distance into thetank, is provided with an arm 11', which is bent at right angles to the body of the red.
I is a block of wood, which is hinged at a point near one of its ends to the inner wall of the tank at one side of the entrance of the inlet-pipe, the body of the block or float extending across the said inlet directly above the rod F, which is attached to the valve. The arm II of said rod, extending vertically, is adapted to contactwith the plate I, which is carried by the float- I, when the said float falls by reason of a lowering of the water within the tank.
Itwill be observed that the plate I consists of a strip of metal bent at a point a short distance from one of its ends to form the portion I at right angles to the body I of the plate. This body portion I" of the plate is provided with a central longitudinal slot 1'.
The float I is provided upon its under face with a recess J, and within this recess is secured the plate I by means of a set-screw K, which is passed through the slot in the body portion of the plate. By this construction it will be readily seen that the position of the portion I of the plate, which contacts with the valve-rod in opening the valve, may be varied in order to adapt it to contact with the said rod at various points, thus permitting the valve to be automatically opened when the float has reached a predetermined point, determined by the fall of the water within the tank.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
