D. N. SHRAWDER. DRINKING FOUNTAIN.
APPLICATION FILED AUG.15, 1911.

UNlTE flTATS PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID N. SHEAWDER, OF NORTH WALES, PENNSYLVANIA.
DRINKING-FOUNTAIN.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID N. SHRAWDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Val-es, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drinking-Fountains, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in drinking fountains for live stock.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a drinking fountain having a swinging closure, and means on the closure cooperating with means on the fountain to insure the proper movement of the closure.
Another object is to provide a fountain having a swinging closure, provided with openings in the lower end thereof so as to lessen the resistance against the water when an animal presses the closure with its nose.
A further object is to provide a drinking fountain having means whereby water may flow into the fountain, but the polluted water after an animal has drunken therefrom is prevented from fiowingbackthrough the pipe.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, and with particular reference to the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device, Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 33 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the closure removed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the fountain comprises the approximately triangleshaped receptacle 10, having vertical side walls 11, and the upwardly and inwardly inclined front and rear walls 12 and 13, the former of which is provided with an opening let through which access may be gained by the animal to the water contained in the receptacle. The port-ion of the wall 12 surrounding the opening forms an inwardly directed flange 14.
Pivotally mounted in the apex of the receptacle, on the shaft 15, is a concavo-convex closure 16, the lower end of which is rolled inwardly at 16 and has therein a weighted bar 17 so that the closure will normally swing forward, and cause the convex side to protrude through the opening. In the lower end of the closure, and just above the weighted bar, is a series of open ings 18. When the animal presses against Specification of Letters Patent.

the swinging closure, and forces the same inwardly, the water contained in the re ceptacle will flow through the openings and offer less resistance to the inward movement of the closure. On each side of the closure and formed therewith, is an inwardly directed flange 18, having on its edge a laterally projecting flange 19, for engagement with the inner face of the wall 12 surrounding the opening of the recepta le, to prevent the closure from swinging clear through the opening. Secured within the receptacle, and just below the pivot rod, and'on either side of the upper end of the closure, is a guide strip 19, engaging with the closure to insure the proper movement of the door to always spring clear of the sides of the opening, so that the same will not stick and stand in an open position. Otherwise, dust and other foreign matter would be blown into the receptacle, and pollute the water.
Leading into the bottom wall 20 of the receptacle, which is concavo-convex, is an inlet water pipe 21, having in its upper end a check valve 22, to permit water to flow into the receptacle, to prevent the polluted water, after an animal has drunken therefrom, to flow back through the pipe, thus securing a fresh, clean supply of water at all times.
From the foregoing it will thus be seen that 1 have provided a simple and eflicient device of this character, and one which is perfectly sanitary, and easily operated by an animal, no projecting parts being exposed to injure them. Also the pivoted closure, will always swing in the opening, to cause the convexed portion to project through the opening to be pushed in by the animals nose so that it may drink.
What is claimed is:
A drinking trough, comprising a receptacle, having an access'opening in its front wall, a pivot shaft engaged in the upper ends of the side walls ofthe casing, flanges surrounding the access opening, a water supply for the casing, a convex closure pivoted upon the shaft for free swinging movement and positioned to lie with its convexity projecting through the access opening when in closed position and having a portion extending below the access opening within the casing, said portion being perforated, a weight carried by the lower portion of the closure, inwardly directed flanges carried by the side of the closure, laterally directed flanges carried by the inner edges of the closure flanges and arthe third named flanges during its move- 10 ranged to engage the flanges which surround ment and guide it through the access opening. the opening to limit the outward movement In testimony whereof I aifix my signature,
of the closure, said third named flanges bein the presence of two Witnesses.
ing spaced from the side Walls of the casing D AVID N SHRAWDER and terminating short of the upper eX tremity of the closure, and guide strips secured Within the casing and positioned to engage the side flanges of the closure above Vitnesses:
