To all whom it may concern:
Be 1t known that I, GEORGE ZIMMERMAN,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Battle Creek, in the county of Madison, State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in StockJNw,
terers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to wateringdevices and more particularly to that class known as stock waterers.
The object of the invention is to provide a stock waterer which will beof simple construction and sanitary in use the trough thereof being secured in such manner that it may be readily swung upon hinges for cleansing the same but when in position for use will be securely held in place.
In the drawings:Figure 1 is a view of the top portion of the device in position for use. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal view through the complete device. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 83 of Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view on the line 4-4: of Fig. 2.
Referring more specifically to the drawings, in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout, 10 indicates the reservoir having hinged to the upper edge of one end, the trough 11, said trough being hinged thereto along its upper edge and adapted to normally rest within the adjacent end of said reservoir.
The reservoir 10 is provided with the cover 12 hinged to the upper edge of the end opposite that to which the trough 11 is connected the cover 12 extending a short distance over the edge 11 of the trough when said cover is in closed position, thus preventing the stock from moving the trough. The trough 11 is provided with the inlet opening 13 near the upper edge 11 thereof, to permit water from the reservoir 10 to enter the trough.
The reservoir 10 is provided in its rear end with the supplv pipe opening 14 and a second supply pipe opening 15 in the bottom thereof adjacent said rear end, either one of which may be employed to accommodate the supplv pipe 16 while the other opening is elusive, the supply pipe 16 being secured in the opening in the bottom of the reservoir while the other opening 15 has the plug 17 positioned therein but it will be apparent that the arrangement of the supply pipe 16 and plug 1'? mav be reversed should occasion require. 7
The'threaded end of the supply pipe 16 is shown extending into the reservoir and secured around this end is the valve seat 18 to the upper face of which are secured the lower ends of the valve supporting legs 19,
which lower ends are bent downward y at right angles to the main portion of said legs. Positioned through the central openin 20 in the main portion of the legs 19, is the valvestem 21 carrying the valve 22 upon its lower end which is resiliently held away from the valve seat 18 and against the underside of the legs 19, by means of the coil spring 23 positioned around the stem above said legs 19 and bearing against the latter and against the head 24c and the upper end of the stem 20. This permits of a free flow of water into the reservoir even though the water pressure is low.
Secured to the bottom of the reservoir 10, is the horizontal le 25 of an L-shaped bracket, from the upper end of the upwardly extending arm 26 of which projects the pin 27 which extends in. a horizontal direction and transverselv of the reservoir. The L- shaped bracket serves to support the valve controlling mechanism which is suspended upon the pin 27, as will now be fully described.
The valve controlling mechanism consists of a horizontal rod 28 having its rear end inclined downwardly as shown at 29 and then directed upwardly as shown at 30 for purposes to be presently explained while the float 31 is adjustably secured through the forward end thereof, the stem 32 projecting downwardly from the float 31 being passed through one of the series of openings 33 within said rod 28 and adjustably held in position by means of the nuts 3d threaded upon said stem and engaged a 'ainst opposite faces of the rod. The horizontal rod 28 is bowed about midway its length, as shown at 35, which bowed portion is engaged over the pin 27 and the oppositely curved strap 36 is secured to the bowed portion 85. The strap 36 lies beneath the pin 27 and limits the longitudinal movement of the rod 28 upon said pin Without interfering 16 and the latter secured in the bottom of the reservoir, the portion of the horizontal rod 28 between the bowed portion and the inclined portion 29, engages the head 24: of the valve stem 20 and thus forces the valve 22 toward the valve seat 18 as the float 31 rises, thus cuttingofi' a supply of water to the reservoir. Upon downward movement of the float 31, however, the spring 23 draws the valve 20 away from the seat l8, ,as Will 5 be clearly apparent.
