Description
C. A. WILSONJ Thermostat. v
Patented Oct. 18, 1859.
Wifw as gas.-
UNITED STATES PATENT oEEIcE.
CHAS. A. WILSON, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
THERMOSTAT.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 25,860, dated October 18, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. VVILsoN, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Thermostats; and I hereby declare the following to be a full and exact description of the same,'reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
The subject of this improvement is a thermostat adapted to automatically open and close the air vent from the radiator or steam chest of a house warming apparatus, and the invention consists in an arrangement whereby the stem, or spring of the thermostat (being hollow) is made aportion of the escape passage, and in an arrangement for graduating the points of heat at which the venta 'e shall be closed and o aened.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure '1 is a front view. Fig. 2 is an edge view. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section. Fig. 4 is a transverse section at w m. Fig. 5 is a transverse section at y 12 Fig. 6 is a transverse section at a a.
A is a portion of a radiator.
B, C, is the spring of the thermostat, consisting of a flat tube of which the side B next th eradiator is of brass, and that farthest from the radiator (C) is of steel. This tube is closed at its two ends and near one end it is attached to the radiator and communicates directly with the interior through a short pipe D. Its other end has a nozzle E which when the thermostat is placed on the outside of the radiator forms a selfopening ventage for air.
F is a set screw provided at its inner end with a pallet H of cork gum elastic or other suitable material to tightly close the ventage E, when the latter is pressed against it by the thermal action. The screw F may be advanced so as to entirely close the ventage, or retracted so as to cause the escape or retention of air to occur at any desired temperature.
I am aware that thermostats composed of bars of difi'erent metals so as to operate by lateral deflection have long been applied to the purpose of regulating the flow of fluids.
I claim as new and of my invention herein and desire to secure by Letters Patent.
A tubular thermostat forming a part of the steam or other passage to be regulated and adapted by means of the unequal eX- pansion of the metals of which it is composed, to close the said passage by lateral deflection as explained.
In testimony of which invention, I here unto set my hand.
C. A. WILSON.
