SAMUEL MOBRETT, OF VEST PENNSBOROUGH TOWNSHIP, CUMBERLAND COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEM ENT IN PRESERVE-CANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 23,384, dated. March 2 9, 1959.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL MORRETT, of \Vest Pennsborough township, county of Gumberland, State of Pennsylvania. have invented a new and Improved Mode of Closing Fruit- Gans AirTight; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,with reference marked thereon.
Figure A represents a covered can. Fig. B represents the cover, (lower side.) Fig. 0 represents an uncovered can.
The nature of my invention consists in closing an aperture of any size in fruit-cans by a circular convex cover adjusted on can while the fruit is hot, and with the cover firmly compressed the can is inserted in cold water until equilibrium of temperature is obtained. \Vhen the can is removed, the lid is securely held to its position by the outward pressure of the atmosphere.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I construct my can in any of the known forms with a circular aperture in the end. I. raise the rim of the aperture one-eighth of an inch. (See Fig. 0.)
Fig. B represents the under side of cover.

hen the fruit is heated to 212 Fahrenheit, the can should then be filled and the cover adjusted, above described.

The covering of fruit-cans by means of the concave cover B,when the same is constructed and applied as hereinbefore described, and retained in place solely by atmospheric pressure.
