Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

EDMUND 'LOOKVVOOD7 OF ULSTER, PENNSYLVANIA.

IMPROVED 'SHOT-HOLE STOPPER.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 311,509, dated February 25, 1862.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EDMUND LocKwooD, of Ulster, in the county of Bradford,in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Stopping Shot-Holes and Preventing Leakage of Water Made in Vessels by Cannon-Balls or Otherwise; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, Jforming part of this specification, in which- Figure l represents the cap; Fig. 2, its application to the perforation of a vessel.

The nature of my invention consists in providing a metal cap with flange to cover the outside of shot-holes, having an elastic substance attached to face of said flange, so that it will conform to the side of the vessel, having also a spindle made fast to the center of the cap and extending to the inside of said vessel, with a cross-bar to secure and draw up said cap by screw or otherwise.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I Will proceed to describe its construction and operation.

I construct the cap of metal with a convex surface, so as to give it strength. On the inside I attach some elastic substance to the fiat side of said plate that comes upto the side of the vessel. I attach to the center of said cap a spindle or stem of iron. The said spindle has side springs to hold said plate in its place until vsecured by the central screw. The side springs by their expansion hold the said plate in holes of different diameters. After the plate has been temporarily secured by the side springs of the spind'leit canbe permanently secured by the screw on the end of the spindle operating upon the cross-bar to prevent the leakage of water in vessels.

WhatI claim, and desire to secure by LettersV Patent, is-

A shot-plug consisting Iof a metallic plate or disk, the outside of which is convex, the inside lined with an elastic covering having a spindle with bearded side springs and a screw at its end, with a cross-bar in which the end screw is inserted, the parts being constructed and arranged relatively to each other, substantially as and for the purposes specified.

EDMUND LOCKWOOD.
