Description

H. G. DAYTON.
Fruit Can. v No. 20,485. Patented June 8, 1858.
[lillll aTmHr a anus llili M 2! HIH I AMJHOTB'LITHECILNX. (DSBURNE'S PROCESS.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
H. G. DAYTON, OF MAYSVILLE, KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN PRESERVE-CANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 20,485, dated June 8,1858.
. To all whom, it may concern.-
Beit known that I, H. G. DAYTON, of Maysville, in the county of Mason and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Preserve-0ans; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in whichfi Figure l is a side View of a can with my improvement. Fig. 2 is a central section of the same. Fig. 3 is a top view of the claspring employed to confine the indiarubber band.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
The nature of my invention consists in the employment of an india-rubber band in eom bination with a metal cover and an elastic metal clamp, the former being attached permanently to the metal cover in such a manner as to enable it to lap over the sides of the can and cover the joint, and the latter encircling the rubber band and serving, by its elasticity and the shrinkage of the distended rubber band, to render the junction between the body of the can and the cover perfectly air-tight. With this combination of metal cover, rubber band, and metal clasp very thin light rubber can be used, and thus the covers can be made quite cheap compared to what they can be when made entirely of heavy rubber, as in the preserve-can of R. Davis.
To enable others to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A is the can, made with its mouth of the full diameter of its body.
0 is the cover, made of tin-plate,witl1 a rim to fit over the mouth of the can.
B is the india-rubber band, made of a piece of tubing or a ring of sheet india-rubber of a size in its normal condition much smaller than the exterior of the can, that it may require to be stretched to make it pass onto the can, and hence made to hug the can very closely. One end of this band is attached securely and in an air-tight manner to the margin of the rim of the cover by turning up the said margin over it all round, as shown at a a, in Fig. 2. This band may be about three-quarters of an inch in width. Before the cover is applied to the can the band B is turned up over the top of it, as shown in red color in Fig. 2, and after the cover is put on the band is drawn down over the can, as shown in black color in the same figure, and in which position it shrinks so tightly upon the can as to exclude perfectly all air from the joint between the can and cover.
D is a clasp-ring to secure the band B over the can, made of steel or other metal, either with or without a lock joint, as shown at b in Fig. 3. If made of spring-steel and coiled, so as to form in its normal condition a circle smaller than the can, no lock will be necessary, as the ring will clasp the rubber tightly by its elasticity. This clasp is slipped on from the bottom of the can.
what I claimas my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The employment of the rubber band in combination with a metal cover and metal clamp,
substantially as and for the purposesset forth.
H. G. DAYTON.
