Description
TED STAES PATENT OFFCE.
\VILLIAM, Vv'. SHAW, 0l TROY, NEW YORK.
RUBBER HEAD FOR LEAD-PENCILS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 23,504, dated. April 5, 1859; Ressued June 24, 1862, No. 1,319.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. TVM. lV. SrL-nv, of Troy. in the county of Rensselaer and State of New York. hay@ invented a new and lmproved Head for Lead-Pencils, Ink-Erasers, die.; and l do hereby declare that the followingl a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying` drawings. in which- Figure l, represents a vertical centra-l section ot the head which l attach to the top of pencils7 etc. Fig. 2, is a vertical central section of another forni ot the same, and Figs. l and l, are side elevations of pencils with one ot these heads attached to them.
Similar letters of reference in the several views refer to corresponding parts of my invention.
To enable other persons to understand and use my invention I will proceed to describe it.
A' represents a piece of india rubber, the shape ot' which may be such as represented in Fig. l, or which may have a form as represented in Fig'. 9, or any other form convenient for the purpose. I prefer however the form represented in the Figs. l, or 2, as they give a Lrood chance to reach to any mark or to any special point on the paper.
At the same time the round forni is the most convenient, as it can be used on all sides with equal advantage and as its bulk can thus be taken sutliciently large so as to make it last a certain time without being used up. This piece of india rubber A, is provided with a socket B, the diameter of which corresponds to the size of ordinarypencils and which is just large enough and deep enough to tit tightly on the top of the pencil. In order to secure the same permanently to the pencil some sort ol a cement may be used such as gum arabic. glue. &c. l have adopted this method of attachingl the india rubber heads as it thus is not necessary to alter the size ot the pencils to conform to the sockets in the hea ds, and the heads are easily molded with the sockets to suit to the size of the pencils which as is well known. are generally manufactured of a uniform size.
Havingl described my invention I claim as an improved article of manufacture:
A head A, for lead pencils made of rubber in the manner herein shown and described.
l VM. lV. SHAW.
vitnesses PHILAXDEP. PERRY, H. Mosnnn.
