UNITED STATES PATENT CEEICE VILLIAM G. CONKLIN, OF SEATTLE, NVASHINGTON TERRITORY.
IMPROVEMENT IN BlLGE-WATER GAGES.
lSpecification forming part ol' Letters Patent No. 152,971, dated .Iuly 11, 1874; application tiled November 15, 1873.
To all whom it may concer-1L:
Be it known thatI, WILLIAM G. GoNKLrN, of Seattle, in the county ot' King and Territory of Washington, have invented a new and Improved Bilge `Tater Gage, of which the following is a specification My invention consists of a tube formed partly or wholly of glass with a valve in the bottom to allow the tube to iill, anda scale on the side to show the measure of the height of water in the tube, which will be the measure ot' the depth of water in the hold. The valve is arranged so as to be forced open to admit the water by the stem striking the bottom, and closed by a spring.
The drawing is a sectional elevation oi' my improved bilge-Water gage.
The tube is, iu this example, composed of an outer slotted metal part, B, and an inner glass part, C. It is closed at both ends by screw-caps D and E, in one=of which is a ring, F, by which to suspend the tube by a cord, and in the other is the valve G for opening to admit the water and closing to hold it in. It is opened by the stem II, which projects down below the end of the cap, and it is closed by the spring I, which is coiled around said stem and confined between the end of the cap and the cap J screwed onto the lower end of the stem.
This gage will be more reliable than the rod commonly used, because it will show the depth with certainty, while the rod will sometimes not showit at all, particular] yin stormy weather when it is generally wet.
The glass portion of the tube is secured in the metal portion by india-rubber cushions or springs to prevent it from breaking.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A gage consisting of slotted tube B, having screw-caps D E, internal transparent tube C, and the inwardly-opening valve G,- provided with stem H, spring I, and cup J, arranged as and for the purpose specified.
WILLIAM G. GONKLIN.
