IMPROVEMENT IN WATER-INDIGATORS FOB. BOILERS.
dlgs ,Sulphate ttfemr tu iu tinte glitters utmt mit mating gint nf' the anni;
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, ANDnEAs VANGIOF Chicago, in the county of Cook, and State of'Illinois, haveinvented a new and useful Machine to Gauge the Water in Steam-Boilers; and I do hereby declare that the following is e.Y
full and exact description thereof, reference being hail to the accompanying drawings, and the letters ol reference marked thereon, making a. part of this specilication.
The object of my invention is to indicate at all times the neig-ht of thc water in any steam-boiler to which my invention may be applied, to the eye by an indicator, and also to the ear by a steanrwhistle, by means ol a hollow water-tight metallic globe, of' convenient size, resting upon the surface ol' the water in the boiler, and connected by an arm, ruiming parallel with the head of the boiler lo a cylinder provided with a steam-valve opening to thc steam-whistle, as it revolves by the raising or lowering ol' the water in the boiler, in a tube running tlnongh the head ofthe boiler, and to which tube the dial of the indicator and the steam-whistle are fastened; and as the globe rises or falls,`by the rising or lowering ol the water in the boiler, the hcig'ht of the water is indicated upontlie face of the dial by a hand attached to the outer end ol' the cylindcr,or, should the water sink belowa certain point, by the opening of the steamfvalvc to the whistle, and sounding the same as a warning of danger.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation. i
I construct the globe a of copper, or any other suitablemetal, abzut `an eighth of an inch in thickness, and tive to six inches in diameter, water-tight, and it may be lined inside or filled with cork, and attach the saine by an arm, b, to a cylinder, c, providing the cylinder with a Steam-valve, d, to which cylinder I adjust a tube, e R, which is to be inserted into the boiler-head, and made fast by a nut, within'which the cylinder revolves, and upon the outer end of which is adjusted an indicator, f, and in which a steam-whistle is placed, in a position corresponding with the position of the valve d. My invention may be applied to any steam-boiler, andis to be adjusted so that the globe a rests upon the surface 'of the water in the boiler at-its proper height; and as the water is increased or diminished in the boiler, the globe will rise or l'all correspondingly, the height ol' the water, therefore, being shown by the indicator-f at all times; and should the water at any time increase or diminish above or below a certain point, the steam-valve isiopened to the whistle, which is thereby sounded as an additional indication ol` the stage of the water in the boiler, and as a warning ol' danger; i
What I claim as my invention. and desire to' secure by Letters Patent, is`
The arrangement of the globe a, arm b, cylinder c, indicator f, and whistle g, substantially as herein set lortl1.`
