Patented May I4. 1867.

IMPROVEMENT IN LOW-WATER INDICATORS.
@he dpwh ttfrtnt tu in, tlgrsttdtct jnteut mit nuttig pitt tt tige stmt TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN Beit known that I, GEORGE MCALLISTER, of the city and county of- San Francisco, State of California, have invented a certain new and improved Water-Gange for Steam Boilers; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sudicient to enable anyperson skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvement without further invention or experiment.
My invention relates to an improvement in that classof gauges designed to indicate the level of the water in steam boilers, and consists of a hollow steam-tight case, composed of a central hub, the space enclosed by two lradial lines extending` from this hub to the circumference of a circle of the proper size for the index or scale. Within this case is an arm moving-about an axis in the centre of the hub, and having at its outer extremity a hollow dont. An indicatoris placed on the end of the axis outside, and corresponds with the position of the float on the inside. Steam and Water are admitted to the case by pipes connecting with the steam and water space in the boilers, so that the position of the iioat and consequently the height of the water is easily ascertained at a glance.
To more fully explain my invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, of-which- Y Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the index.
Figure 2 is a side'sectional elevation showing the float.
` Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A is a part of a case in which a iioat moves, and forms the arc of a circledcscribcd about the centre of the hub C. The part B of the case is contained between two radial lines extending from the hub C to the are A. This case is hollow, and is connected with the steam and water space in the boilers by pipes from the openings D D. E is a shaft passing through the hub C, and has fastened to the end which projects beyond the ease an indicator', I". A scale or index, Gr, is placed on the out-side of A, over which F passes. Inside the hub G an arm, I, is attached to the shaft E, and projects into the arc A in the same plane with the indicator F. A hollow float, J, is attached to the outer end of the arm I, which moves up and down as the water is higher or lower in the boiler and gauge. H is a cap which can be removed for the purpose of adjusting the'iloat.
Figure 3 shows thc method of working a tight joint where the stem er axis E passes out through the side of the case. This is done by keeping the conical surfaces. at a in close contact by means of the spring 6. By constructing a gauge in this manner the arms have a perfect freedom of motion without any leakage, while the case' can be separated from the boiler easily in the event of any repairs being needed, when the whole apparatus can be easily inspected. i y
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is`l A water-gauge composed of the oat J, arm I, parts or case A, B, and C, and passages D D, constructed substantially as and for` the purpose described.
In witness whereof Iliave hereunto set my hand and seal. i A
