JOSEPH H. SPRINGER-.OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Lettera Patent No. 74,442, dated February 11, 1868.
@hrteste uumlr tu vimitan ettas'itsut mit mating putt nt its am.
`To ALL wnoM IT MAY concnnn: I
Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. SPnINesR, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Indicators for Steam-Boilers; and I do hereby d'eclare that ther followingis a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this speciication, in which-4- I Figure 1 is a longitudinalvertical section, taken through the line x, andA Y Figure-'2 a. sideeleuation, exhibiting the glass gauge, also the cocks, by means of which 'the cylinder is connected with the steam-generator. v
The nature of my invention consists, first, in the employment of weights, suspended in a cylinder, for the purpose of giving an alarm, in' case of high orlow water, or ovcrpressure of steam, substantially in the manner hereinafter set forth; second, in the use of a hollow cap Vas a receptacle for the safety-valve. 4 To enable others skilled in the srtto make and use my invention, I will now describe its construction and operation.
A represents a double cylinder, provided at its top and bottom with rims 6 b. VTo these rims are secured -the plates e e', which should fit tight and accurately over the. rims b b. On the under side of plate ears the `hangers a a. q represents a. clam-lever, pivoted at its centre to hanger a. g is a supplementary lever, with a friction-roller at one end resting upon the cam-lever, while its opposite end is pivoted-'to hanger a. Through the plate e is an orifice, in which s'placed thevalve c'. The' lower end of this valve rests upon the supplementary lever,:asseoir.iniig.v 1. B B represent two weights, which may be of stone, or any other suitable material, and which are/suspended from theends of lever q by cords or wire of unequal length. I would observe that one of these weights should be greater. by\one-third than the other, s'. e., in weight. The Vobject of this is that the large stone or weight, when immersed in water,'weighs less by one-third, or, more properly speaking, displaces one third of its weig'ht, so that the smaller weight will balanc the larger. This featureof the invention will be i/'ully understood. hereafter. h represents the valve-lever, provided with the movable weight n. Said lever is pivoted 'to the upright'c` on plate e', and rests upon the valve as shown in iig. 1. Dis a hollow cap, tting upon and secured -to plate e. Upon the top of this cap is the whistle E. G. representsthe glass gauge, connected to the cylinder at top and bottom by means of tubes o o. The object of this gauge is to indicate the r.cause of the alarm. H H are two cbcks, which connect the cylinder to the boiler; one, half way above the water-line, and the other the sa-me distance below it.
The operation of my invention is as follows: Thesafety-valve is first weighted to `the pressure the boiler'` is to carry, say sixty pounds. New letthe water in the machine until it submerges the large stone, vwhen the small one will balance it. If the water in the boilershould fall to near ,the bottom of the large stone, the difference'in the weight, operating on the cam=lever and the supplementary lever, will raise the snfetyvalve, and
admit the steam to the whistle. If water be again pumped into the boiler, and raised high enough-to submerge.4
both stones or" weights, the gravity of the weights becomes relatively what it would be'if both were out of the water, again raisinglthe valve and giving the alarm'. `Thus, it. will be observed thatvmy invention will indicato high steam, and also high and low water; the cause being told by looking at the glass gauge.
What I desire to secure by Letters Patent, is A 1. The employment of two unequal weights, suspended by cords or rods of unequal lengths to a lever, with itsl fulerum at its centre, arranged inside of a cylinder attached' to the outside of a steam-boiler, said weights. lbeing subjectto the action of. high and low water, substantially as and for the piirpose set forth.v
2. IIn combination with the above, the levers gg', arranged within a cylinder outside of the boiler, substsn# tially as and furthe purpose specified. I
3. Arranging the safety-valve within the hollow cap I), substantially as and for the purpose specified. 4. The glass gauge G, when used in combination with cylinder A, and weights B B, substantially as set forth.V
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as'lny own, I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
