LEVI FJSMITIL' OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 105,503, dated July 19, 187
IMPROVEMENT m GAUGE-COCKS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LEVI E. SMITH, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gauge-Cook for Steam-Generators; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and'exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of refer ence marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
' The nature of my invention consists in the con struction and arrangement of a gauge-cock for steamgenerators, as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled '1' the art to which my invention appcrtains to make' and use. the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and opelation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of my gauge-cock; V
Figure 2 is a view of the outer end of new part which is screwed into the steam-boiler; and
Figure 3-is a view of theiuner end of the weighted part of the gauge-cock. r
A represents that part of a gauge or try-'cockwhich is screwed into the steam-boiler. V
This part is provided, near its outer end, onthe upper side, with a projection, B, curved, as. shown, on its upper side, and a slot cut from the rear side, so as to form a book, as seen in fig. 1.
The outer cnd of the part A is provided with a double valve-seat, a. v
The lever O is provided at its inner end with a boxlike extension, D, having a pin, b, through its upper end, which pin is placed in the slot or hook on the 'projection B, whereby said lever becomes 'hingedor pivoted to the part A. The sides of the box D extend asuitableldistance below the double valve-seat a of the part A, so as to prevent the water or steam passingout from escaping at the sides, but conduct it downward.
In the back of the box I) is placed a piece, 11, of lead or rubber, against which the valve-scat a rests, forming an impression in the same.
On the outer end of the lever C is suspended at weight, E, which may be made adjustable, if so desired.
It will readily be seen that the valve-seat a being double, a ring is formed in the lead or rubberd, which fits in" between the two seats, making it perfectly tight, and the valve seat will not work through the lead or rubber as soon as is the case with a single val veseat.
Having thus fully described my invention,
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
' 1. The part A, constructed as described, with slotted or hooked projections B and double valve-seat a,
substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The weighted lever 0, provided with hon-like extension D, pin 1), and lead or rubber d, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The combination of the part A with projection 13 and double valve-seat a, and the lever G, with weight E, box D, pin 1), and lead or rubber d, all con structed and arranged substantially I as and for'thc purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my haud this 4th day of J uue, 1870.
' LEVI F. SMITH.
