TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known thatI, DAVIDMcFARLAND, ofthe city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new l and improved Low-Water Indicator and Steam-Pressure Alarm; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description thereof, whichwill enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same,` reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming partl of this specification.
This invention relates lto a new and improved device for indicating when the water in a steam-boiler gets below a proper level; and also for giving an alarm when the steam-pressure in a boiler exceeds the required standard. d
' In the accompanying vsheet Vof drawings- Figure 1 is a vertical section ofmy invention, taken in the line a; x, iig. 2.
'Figure 2, a side elevation ot' the same, partly in section, as indicated by the line yy, iig. 1.
Figure 3, a section of a portion of the same, ltaken in the line z e, iig. 1. r
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding, parts. l w
AV represents a cylinder, which communicates, bydmcans of two .pipes'B C, with a steam-boiler, the upper pipeB entering the boiler at the line 'of the lowcrt water-level, and communicating with the cylinder A near its upper end. l
` The pipe C communicates with the'lower part of thelboiler. 4
Within the cylinder A there is placedla float, D, which is hollow, provided with a'perforated bottom, a, and
filled withA hemp orany lsuitable fibrous material ax.
To the upper end of this float a rod, E, is attached, which passes up through a stui`ng-box, I, on the top -of thecylinder, and is pivoted at its upper ond to a beam, G, havingr its 'fulcrurn at b, and a movableor adjustlan ordinary steam-whistle, J, (see iig. 2.).
able weight, H, on its outer part, (see iig.. 1.)
l AThis beam G is connected, as shown'at e, to the stem d of a valve, I. which, when raised, admits steam to To thelower part of thechamber K of valve I, there is attached a pipe at e, and this pipe communicates 4with the steam-boiler at any point above the water-level.
By this arrangement, when the steam-pressure in the boiler exceeds a certain point, thc valve I will be raised, andthe whis't'lcfsounded, Tthe weight H bein'ff adjusted on the beam G, so that the alarm cannot be sounded "until the pressure in vthejboiler exceeds the standard required.y
The cylinder A will be illed'wi'th water, and romain illed .so long as the water in the boiler is above the Aorifice of the pipe B, and consequently both ppesB C submerged, and the'buoyancy of the float D will keep the valve `I closed.
But, when the water in the boiler descends, so that steam can enter thepipe B, the water in 'A will immediately fall to a level with that in the boiler, and snch'a smalbquantity of water willl bepleit in A that the gravity Vof the iloat will raise the valve I, and cause thc'whistle or alarm to be sounded.
The filling ef hemp or .other fibrous material in the iio'at D is designed to prevent anyspace for the reception and expansion of steam therein.
Said material will become saturated witlLwater, and remain so within the loat as long as the boiler is in use.
The hollow metallic floats are very` unreliable, when used in connection with or applied to'low-water detectors and alarms, on account of their leakage of water, and the steam generated within them. p
In the bottom of the cylinder A there s a faucet, L by opening which the cylinder Vmay be cleaned of all impurities, the water from the boiler being forced'through it under' the pressure ofthe steam.
.M is a lever, under the beam, and, by operating thislevor at any time, the beam Gdmay be raised, and the lwhistle sounded, whenever requiredA for any purpose.
Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The ilo-.it D, constructed of a hollow cylinder, iilled with hemp or other suitable ibrous material, v.substantiallyas and for the purpose set forth.
2. The float D, in combination with the weighted lever G, valve VI, and pipe e, substantially as herein shownA and described. I DAVID MCFARLAND.
