GAGE-COCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 733,548, dated July 14, 1903-.
Application lcd March 2l, 1903. 'Serial No. 148,8111. (No model.)y
To all whom, it may concern.-
Beit known that I, WILLIAM GUETHLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gage-Cocks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to gage-cocks with removable weighted handles; and the objects of myimprovements are, first, to provide means by which when the gage-cock is opened the steam and hot Water are directed in one direction only; second, to so arrange the pivot of the weighted handle as that each handle may be lifted from its respective gage-cock without disturbing the one next above, as generally three of such cocks are mounted closely together on one Water-column of a steam-generator; third, to provide means by which the packing material may be easily removed and renewed; and to these ends my invention consists of the various improvements hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
My invention will be more fully understood taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, and in which- Figure lis a top view of my improved gagecoek, showing the removable handle in position when the gage-cock is closed. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. I, showing the pivoting of the removable handle, the steam and Water outlet, and the mounting of the packing material; and Fig. 3 is a section of the pivoted end of the handle, showing a setscrew to adjust the packing material.
Referring now to the drawings for a further description of my invention, A isastock provided with a bore a and a nozzle a at right angles thereto, and this stock is adapted to be screwed into the side of a water-column in the usual manner. Around the nozzle d and extending downward beyond the same is formed a sleeve o2 for a purpose to be presently described.
The handle B is provided with a pin b, secured in the cheeks b', extending along each side of the free end of the stock A, and in the top ot' this end of the stock is provideda slot co3 for the reception of the pin b, forming a hinge for the removable handle B. The handle B between its cheeks b/ is provided with an extension b3, which when in the position shown in Fig. 2 covers the nozzle a'. The sleeve co2 is cut out suiiciently for the eXtension b3 to enter. In this extension b3 and coinciding with the nozzle is embedded a rubber tip or packing o to produce a water and steam tight joint. A hole b4 is drilled in the extension b3, and to remove the tip or packing o a nail or piece of wire may be forced through said hole after the handle B has been removed from the stock A, and then a new tip may be inserted.
It will be noticed from Fig. 2 that the horizontal distance of center of pin b from the nozzle a is very small, so that the leverage of the handle is in favor of a light counter weight b5. The slot a3 for the pin b is slanting from the outside toward the nozzle, so that by partially lifting the Weighted end of the handle B the latter may easily be removed from the stock for any purpose.
The sleeve a2 is especially provided to coniine the escaping steam or Waterin one direction, and preferably downward only, to prevent the squirting of the hot wat-er and steam over the Whole boiler-room and attendants, as is the case with all such gage-cocks having removable handles. In my improved gage-cock the handle B may be lifted only a trilie or wide open and the steam and water will discharge strictly in one small column in the direction of the axis of the sleeve a2.
In Fig. 3 I have shown the extension b3 of the handle B provided with a set-screw bs,
adapted to adjust the rubbertip c relativelyto the nozzle o.
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A gage-cock having a stock provided with a bore, a nozzle communicating with said bore and being at right angles thereto, in combination with a weighted handle hinged in a slot of the said stock sleeve on said stock hand in the presence of two subscrihing wtl and surrounding the said nozzle, an exLennesses. sion on said handle entering said sleeve and adapted to close said nozzle, and a packing WILLIAM GUETHLER 5 between the extension and the nozzle, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set niy Vitsnesses:
