HEATER FOR STOCK-TROUGHS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 511,333, dated December 26, 1893.
Application liled March 27, 1893. Serial No. 46 7,848. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern..-
Be it known that I, ALPHoNzo HAYWARD, of Warsaw, in the county of Kosciusko and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heaters for Stock-Troughs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates generally to heaters, and particularly to an improved device for heating the water in troughs for stock. Vater troughs are commonly exposed to all kinds of weather, and during the winter months, frequently freeze, and as they are usually constructed of wood, there is no way of heating them. Consequently, the farmer is put to a great inconvenience in supplying his stock with water.
The object of my invention is to overcome lall these objections and provide a heater which can be used in any kind of water trough for the purpose of heating water, and preventing the same from freezing.
With these objects in view, my invention consists essentially of a cylindrical body, closed at the bottom, and adapted to receive an ash pan and grate, an air supply pipe, and a stove cover and pipe.
Myinvention consists also in certain details of construction and combination of parts, all of which will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1, is a view of a trough having my improved heater arranged therein. Fig. 2, is a vertical sectional view of the heater, and Fig. 3, is a detail view of the ash pan and grate supporter.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a cylindrical body A, which is closed at the bottom, and preferably constructed of cast metal, such as iron. This body is also made smaller at the bottom than at the top. The body A, is provided with a detachable cover A', made in two sections a, and a', the parta, being smaller than the part a', and is formed with a stove pipe opening a2, surrounded by the usual collar a3, upon which fits the vertical Stove pipe a4. This pipe a4, is provided with an ordinary damper of, and at the top of the pipe is arranged a stationary cowl a6.
W'ithin the stove body, at the bottom of the same, is arranged an ash pan B, whichis of such shape and dimensions that it snugly fits the lower end of the body.
C, C, indicate two handlesor bails, rigidly attached to the ash pan at the sides of the same, said handles or bails extending some distance above the pan',as clearly shown, and are arranged in parallel relation to each other to provide a broad and dat support for a grate D, which rests upon the horizontal portions of said handles. To one side of the grate is attached a vertical rod D', which extends along the inner side of the body to the top of the same, and is then bent outwardly at right angles to provide a handle D2 by means of which the grate can be moved upon the bails C, C, by simply moving the handle D2 back and forth, the cover at', permitting such movement. This section of the cover is provided with a handle H, by means of which it can be removed from the stove body, and the fuel fed to the grate.
In order to provide an air supply for the stove, I provide an air pipe P, which isr tapped into the side of the stove body below the grate, and above the ash pan so that the fuel upon the grate will receive an abundant supply of air, and an upward draftcreated, which will carry all the products of combustion through the stove pipe a4. The air pipe is bent upwardly as shown, and extends alongside the stove body a short distance above the top of thesame. Then it is desired to close said pipe, a cap p, is placed upon the upper end of the same.
The stove or heater, as thus constructed, is adapted to be placed in the water trough and a tire built therein to heat the water, and in operation, the body is first set in the trough containing the water, the level of the water being somewhat below the top of the body, and the top of the air pipe. then inserted, and the grate arranged thereon. The section ct, is then placed on the top, and the stove pipe arranged in position. The fuel is then placed upon the grate, the iire lighted, and the cover a', set in place. The device The ash pan is IOO will then operate like an ordinary stove, and heat the Water. When ever it is desired to shake the ashes down, into the pan, the handle D2 is moved back and forth to accomplish that purpose.
When it is desired to clean the heater, all the above mentioned operations are reversed.
Having thus described my inventomwhat I claim is- In a water heater the combination of a cylindrical body of conical form which is re duced at its lower end and closed at the bottom and open at the top, an ash pan removably tted in the lower part of said body and having a pair of upwardly projecting parallel handles or hails which form a horizontal rest at a distance above the said ash pan, a grate ALPHONZO HAYWARD.
