TANK-HEATER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 16, 1913.
Application filed April 23, 1913. Serial No. 763,126.
To all LU/wm may conce/ra:
Be it known that I, l,Vitamin H. Suini, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oelwein, in the county of Fayette and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clank-Heaters, of which `the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
rlhis invention relates to improvements in tank heaters such as are commonly employed for heating water in stock watering tanks, the principal object of the invention being to provide a simple and inexpensive device for this purpose whereby the water may be maintained at a uniform temperature and prevented from freezing in cold weather.
Another object of the invention resides in the provision of improved means for di recting the fuel into the lire box of the heater', said directing means also serving the purpose of a closure or door for one end of the fire box whereby the heat is conserved.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a tank heater' of the above character which consists of few parts which are of simple construction and may be inexpensively manufactured to produce a heater which may be retailed at nominal cost and is highly efficient and serviceable in practical use.
Vith the above and other' objects in View as will become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions, combinations and arrange ments of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding` of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal section of a tank heater showing the same arranged in a stock watering tank. Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a plan view partly broken away; and Fig. 5 is a detail sectional perspective view.
Referring in detail to the drawings, 5 designates the tank which may be of any desired form or construction, and 6 indicates generally my improved heater which adapted to be arranged therein, the body of the heater being entirelv submerged.
My improved heater includes the body 7 which is provided upon its bottom wall with suitable supporting legs 8 preferably arranged at the corners thereof whereby the bottom of the heater is disposed in spaced relation to the base of the water tank. At one of `its ends, the body of the heater is vertically extended as shown at 9, and this extension is provided with a hinged top orV cover plate l() having a draft opening l1 therein. This draft opening is adapted to be closed by means of a pivotally mounted valve plate l2. The cover l0 is further provided with a suitable handle 13 whereby the same may be moved to its open position when it is desired to feed the tire box of the heater which is indicated by the numeral lll. In this tire box adjacent to the bottoni of the heater, a grate 15 is arranged. rlhis grate consists of a longitudinally slotted plate having its ends downwardly flanged as indicated at 1G to provide supports for the intermediate body portion of the plate. One of the flanges 1G has a plurality of openings 17 formed therein and upon this flange, a sliding draft regulating plate 18 is mounted whereby any desired number of the openings may be covered to regulate the entrance of air beneath the grate. 19 designated a movable door or plate which hingcdly mounted as indicated at Q0 upon one end of the grate l5. This hingedly mounted door when in its vertical position shown in full lines in Fig. 1, constitutes a closed end wall for one end of the lire box let and when disposed at an inclination as shown in dotted lines in said figure, this door serves as a directing means for the fuel which is fed to the heater when the hinged cover plate l() is raised. lhe other end of the body 7 of the heater is provided with an opening to which one end of the pipe 21 is connected. 'l'hrough this pipe the smoke and the prodn ucts of combustion pass and find an outlet through the vertically disposed stack 22 which extends above the tank 5. A butterfly valve 23 is arranged in this stack, and provides the usual damper therefor. The pipe 2l is made up of a plurality of sections which may be coupled together as indicated at 2t in any preferred manner in order to secure a waterstight connection. This pipe is provided with suitable snpnorting legs which rest upon the base of the 'ater tank.
From the foregoing description, the construction and manner of operation of my improved tank heater will be clearly and Vmay be variously modified, as may be required by the particular form and construction of the tank in connection with whichA the device is used. However, in view of the extreme simplicity of the invention, it will be appreciated that the same can be produced at very small manufacturing cost. rlhe device is also highly serviceable, convenient and efficient in practical operation.
While l have shown and described the preferred construction and arrangement of the several elements employed, it is obvious that the invention is Vsusce otible of con siderable modification in the form, proportion and arrangements thereof without departing from the essential features or sacriicing any of its advantages, as claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
l. A tank heater comprising a body having Va feed door at one end and provided with legs whereby the body is supported in spaced relation to the base of the water tank, said body being provided with a tire box, a grate plate in said lire box having its opposed endsanged to space the grate plate from the botto-m wall of said body, one of the flanged ends of the grate plate being fixed to one of the body walls and the other flange of the grate plate being provided with a plurality of openings, a door pivotally mounted upon the latter'end of the grate plate and constituting one of the end walls of the fire box when in its closed position, said door being movable to an inclined position and its upper end in contact with o-ne of the end walls of the body, to direct the fuel into the `fire box, a smoke outletpipe connected to the opposite end of the body, and supporting legs for said pipeV adapted to rest upon the base of the water tank.
2. fr tank heater comprising a body having a feed door at one end, said body being provided with a tire box, a grate plate in said lire box having its opposite ends flanged to space the grate plate from the bottom wall of said body, one ofsaid flanges having openings therein, a sliding plate adjustable over said openings, a door pivotally mounted upon one end of the grate plate and constituting one of the end walls of the fire box when in its closed position, said door being movable to an inclined position with its upper end in Contact with one of the cnd Walls of the body to direct the fuel into the lire box, and a smoke outlet pipe connected to the opposite end of the body.
ln testimony whereof l hereunto aiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
