Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. nee. 28, i915.
Application led December 26, 1914. Serial No. 879,111.
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, OTIsL. DAVIS, a citizen o-f the United States, residing at Iowa City, in the county of Johnson and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stock'IVater-Tanks; and I do hereby declare the following', when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, iny Figure 1 a top or plan View of a stock water-tank constructed in accordancev with my invention. Fig. 2 a vertical sectional lview of the same. Fig. 3 a broken sectional view illustrating a modified form of heater.
This invention relates to an improvement These tanks are usually supplied with running water, but in freezing weather the water freezes so that the tanks are useless.
The object of this invention is to provide a heater. which is located within the tank below the water line by which the temperature of the water may be maintained above the freezing point; also to provide means for keeping the liquid fuel submerged so vas to see that this is maintained at a temperature above freezing point; and the invention Consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claim.
In carrying out my invention I employ a tank 2 of the required dimensions. Usually these tanks arel supplied by an inlet pipe 3 through which water flows into the tank, and'at the desired point an overflow pipe 4 is provided which maintains the water at the desired level. The heater employed may be of any desired form as myl invention is not limited to the details of construction.v For illustration I have shown two burners 5 and 6 fed by a supply pipe 7 which is preferably connected by a flexible tube 8 with a reservoir or container 9 for gasolene, kerosene or other liquid fuel. As herein shown these burners are inclosed in a metal casing 10 through which the inlet pipe 3 extends, and over the burner or burners a coil 11 may be made in the pipe 3 to increase the heating surfaces, the form of the coils being immaterial to this invention; that is, they may be arranged horizontally as shown vin Fig. 2 of the drawings, or vertical coils as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. This casing has an upwardly extending' flue 12 extending above the top of the tank and the upper end being protected by a hood 13. This Hue provides bearings for levers 14 which extend from operating handles 15 downward into connection-with valve stems 16 by which the burners may be regulated. Naturally more or less condensation will form in the interior of the burner casing, and to provide for draining, an opening 17 will be provided in the bottom of the casing which may be inclined, if necessary; and connected with this opening is a discharge pipe 18 which may lead to one side of the casing as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, or through the bottom thereof as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The font or reservoir 9 is preferably maintained-in position below the water level by connecting to it. a weight 19, and the reservoir or font may be provided with an upwardly extending lilling neck 20. e
In freezing weather the font 9 is filled v with liquid` fuel and the burners lighted. These burners will heat lthe water as it passes through the burner casing, so that as it is discharged into the tank the temperature will be well above freezing point. The water in the tank is also kept warm by the hea-t of the casing and this warm water will keep the liquid fuel in temperature well above the freezing point so that combustion at the burners is improved. A further advantage of having the fuel font or reservoir submerged is that if the water tank is located in a'barn or other building danger of re from vthe heater is very much y The combination with a stock water-tank,
of a heater arranged therein, said heater comprising a casing having an upwardly eX- tendng flue, a burner within said easing, a feed pipe extending through said casing, a floating reservoir flexibly connected with said feed pipe, and means for holding the reservoir at a point below the water level.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for ve cents each, by addressing In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification n the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
