SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No 349,695 dated September 28, 886. Application filed January 14, 1886. Serial No. 188,568. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES W. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Enterprise, in the county of Dickinson and 5 State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heating-Drums; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, 7 reference being had to the accompanying drawiugs, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon,which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in heating-drums which are adapted to be applied between the joints of a stove-pipe so as to utilize the heat which would otherwise pass into the flue; and my invention consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set to rth and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure '1 is a perspective view oftheexterior ofmyimprovement. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a transverse section. Fig. 4 is a side view, partly broken away to show the interior construction. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the bottom of the drum. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view. Fig. 7 is a detail section view illustrating a modified manner of connecting the drum and pipe.
A refers to the drum or cylinder, which is of a greater diameter than the stove-pipe to which it is applied, and said drum or cylinder is pro vided with central openings, adjacent to which are attached collars a, to which issecured, by means of rivets a, the upper section of the pipe A. The lower section of pipe, A,is conneeted to the opposite head of the drum in the same manner. The heads of the drum B and B are attached to the cylinder in the usual manner.
0 refers to the inside pipe, which is provided above and below its center with openings 0 and c, said openings being located on a line with each other, and a damper, D, is pivotally secured at the center portion of this interior pipe, and has a handle, d, which'extends from said damper to the outside of the drum A.
E refers to a continuous partition-plate,
which extends iron] the upper end of the drum downwardly and near the centerot' the same, after which it is bent at right angles, so as to cross the drum horizontally in front of the pipe 0, and when said partition reaches the opposite side of said pipe it is bent downwardly until it reaches the opposite end of the drum upon which it rests. The vertical portion of this partition plate adjacent to the center pipe, 0, is secured thereto by rivets c which sci-veto hold the same securely in place.
By the construction hereinbefore described, it will be noted that when the damper is turned horizontally, as shown in Fig. 2, the heat and products of combustion will enter the center pipe and pass through the opening 0 therein, and will from thence pass around between the drum and exterior of the pipe 0 until it reaches the opening 0 in the pipe, through which it will pass to the flue. By causing the products of combustion to take this circuitous course the heat will be utilized and very little pass up the flue and be wasted. WVhen it is desired that the products of combustion pass directly to the fine, the damper can be turned vertically so as to form no obstruction in the pipe 0, in which case the heat will pass directly to the flue.
F refers to a cleaner or scraper, which is placed within the drum, and normally rests upon the bottom thereof, said cleaner or scraper extending partially around the inner pipe, and the same has attached thereto a handle, f, which extends upwardly and out of the upper top of the drum B. By moving this handle up and down the soot or other accumulations will be loosened from the sidewalls of the pipe and may be removed from the drum through an opening, in the bottom thereof, said opening being adapted to be covered by a pivoted plate, G. The plate of the scraper or cleaner F is slightly spiral, so that the soot or other deposits which may fall thereon will be deposited near the opening 9.
