l Portable Stoves. No.l48,970. Patented March 24, 1874.

UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE,
RIOE MOORE, OF NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE sTovEs.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,970, dated March 5.24, 1874; application filed March 4, 1874.
Vdo hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear. and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in certain improvements upon the portable stove for which Letters Patent No. 144,469 were granted to me November 1l, 1873, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan View of my portable stove embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a front elevation, Fig. 3 a longitudinal vertical section, and Fig. 4 a transverse vertical section, ofthe same. Figs. 5 and 6 show the construction of an auxiliary heating-chamber attached to the stove.
In my present specilication I do not deem it necessary to describe those parts of the stove which remain as they were in my former patent, as they are fully described therein.
A represents the lire-box, constructed substantially the same as in my former patent, except that I have provided it with a cast-iron basket grate, B, which will be more durable than as formerly constructed. In my former patent, the vessels or culinary utensils cxtended down through thc top oven plate, which I have found is objectionable for many reasons. In this case I have diminished the height of the oven O, and increased the height of the hot-air chamber l), so that the utensils will not extend down into the oven. In the top ofthe oven is inserted an ash-pan, E, provided with a perforated bottom to admit hot air from the oven into the chamber D. Gis the top of the stove, in which the vessels are placed. This top I have made removable, and added a solid depressed top, H, for holding irons to be heated for laundry purposes. On the sides of the stove are also racks I I, upon which irons may be placed on end to be heated. When the solid top H is used, a narrow chimney, J, is placed opposite an aperture, a, in the rear end of the hot-air chambenD. This chimney is, near its upper end, provided with a perforated plate or wire-gauze, b, to prevent soot, Ste., from escaping, and the lower end of the chimney slides into suitable guides formed on or attached to the stove. IVhen the chimA ney J is not in use, the aperture c is closed by a sliding door, K. From one side of the oven O extends a short pipe, el, outward and upward, over the end of which is placed a pipe, L, extending, at a similar angle, from the bottom of a pan or chamber, M. In the bottom of this chamber, over the end of the pipe L, is a regulating-damper, N, to admit more or less hot air from the oven into said chamber. O represents the top of this chamber, which top is depressed so as to be used for heating irons for laundry purposes. To the top O is hinged a perforated plate or wire-gauze, P, to be thrown down over the top O when it is desired to use the extension or chamber M for the purpose of keeping food or other articles hot in a kitchen or dining-room.
This chamber forms a valuable auxiliary to any stove1 to utilize some of the heat from the oven, and said chamber may be attached to.
and supported from the stove in any suitable manner. .IVhen the chamber M is not to be used, it may be removed, and the end of the pipe Z is then closed by a cap, R.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the oven O, pipes d L, chamber M, and damper N, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I afx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
RICE MOORE.
Witnesses SUE/DEERFIELD BROWN, EPHRAIM; PIXETT.
