ANTIFREEZ ING DRINKING-FOUNTAIN FOR POULTRY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 21, 1910.
Application filed February 1, 1910. Serial No. 541,348.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. Asrr- CRAFT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Janesville, in the county of Rock and State of WVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Antifreezing Drinking- Fountains for Poultry, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to drinking fountains for poultry and has for its object the provision of a device that is adapted for use in freezing weather and consisting of a casing containing a lamp, and a trough and supply tank seated in the casing, the heat generated by the lamp serving to prevent the contents of the tank and trough from freezing.
The construction and operation of my improved drinking fountain will be described in detail hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure l is a side view in elevation of my improved drinking fountain, and Fig. 2, is a central vertical sectional view.
In the drawings similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
The base casing 1 of my improved fountain has its sides perforated as shown at 2 to admit air to the lamp 3 but which are small enough to prevent combustible litter, that may be kicked up by the fowls, from entering the casing and coming in contact with the flame of the lamp.
4: indicates a flange extending inwardly from the side of casing 1 adjacent to its top edge on which is seated the drinking trough, which consists of a dish-like receptacle having a central opening 6 therein slightly larger in diameter than the flue 7 of the lamp 3, and 8 indicates an upstanding flange surrounding said central opening, said flange being preferably made higher than the rim of receptacle 5, though it is not essential. The flange 8 being spaced apart from the flue 7 provides an air space 8 that permits circulation of air between the flue and flange to prevent the water in the trough from getting over-heated and the parts from melting when the tank is empty.
The supply tank consists of an inverted open-ended cylinder 9 secured to the receptacle 5 by means of hooks 10 or an equivalent releasable fastening, 9 indicating the water feed.
11 indicates a heating dome secured centrally of the open end of the tank cylinder by means of cross pieces 12, said dome consisting essentially of an inverted cup-shaped receptacle having its edge on the same plane as the edge of the tank.
13 indicates a tubular outlet duct for the products of combustion from the lamp 3, connecting the top of the dome 11 and the outer portion of the tank 9, said inclined construction of the duct being designed to most effectually catch the heat-rays from the products of combustion passing through the duct.
14; indicates a handle pivotally secured to the top of tank 9 for convenience in handling the tank and trough.
In operation the tank 9 is filled when in an inverted position, the trough is then placed in position on the tank and secured thereto by means of hooks 10. When the tank and trough are turned over the water will pour through hole 9 until the trough is filled up to the top of the hole when the pressure of the atmosphere on the water in the trough will overcome the pressure of the air and water in the tank and the water will not rise any higher in the trough. As the water is used out of the trough so that the hole 9 is partly exposed air will enter the tank and sufficient water will pour out to again fill the trough up to the top of the hole 9*, this action of the tank and trough continuing until the water in the tank is on the same level as the water in the trough.
By placing the trough and tank in the base casing 1 where the trough is seated on flange 4: the fountain is best adapted for full grown fowls as elevating the trough prevents them from filling it with trash and dirt in scratching, and in cold, freezing weather the water in the tank and trough may be kept from freezing by burning the lamp 3, the heat therefrom not only warming the water in the tank but also taking the chill off of the water in the trough, the construction by which the trough seats inside of the casing 1 admitting of the base of the trough and its outer edge being heated by the lamp so that ice cannot form therein.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is 1. In a poultry drinking fountain, a casing, a lamp contained in said casing, a drinking trough seated in said casing and having an opening to receive the lamp flue, an upstanding flange surrounding said opening, said flange being spaced apart from the lamp flue, a sup ly tank consisting of an inverted open-en ed c linder seated in said trough and having a eed hole in its side, a heating dome secured in said tank and inclosing the flanged opening in the trough, and an outlet duct leading from said dome to the outside of the tank.
2. A poultry drinking fountain comprising a casing having perforated sides, an inardly extending flange adjacent to the top of the casing, a lamp contained in the casing, a drinking trough seated on said flange and having a central opening therein to receive the lamp flue, an upstanding flange surrounding said opening and spaced apart from the lamp flue, a supply tank consisting of an inverted open-ended cylinder removably secured in the trough and having a feed hole in its side, a heating dome secured in said tank and inclosing the flanged opening in the trough, and an outlet duct leading from said dome to the outside of the tank.
In testimony whereof I hereto affix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
WILLIAM H. ASHCRAFT. Witnesses HENRY F. CARPENTER, EDWIN F. CARPENTER.
