WAIST-BELT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 447,877, dated March 10, 1891.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HENRY AJHAYDEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain Improvements in Waist-Belt Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to devices for use on \vaistbelts, the main object being to prevent the waistband of the trousers from slipping below the belt. It is well understood by those who wear belts in lieu of suspenders that the trousers are aptto work down until the waistband escapes from under the belt and an unsightly gap is left between them.

My invention has for its main purpose an attachment to the belt to prevent this and to cause the belt to hold the trousers up in their proper place, all as will be more particularly I having a fork 1) formed in it to receive the hereinafter described.

In carrying out my invention I provide an elongated flattened loop to form a slide on the belt. This slide may be moved alongthe belt lengthwise thereof to suit the convenience of the wearer. On this slide is mounted detachably a button-grip with a pocket to take under a button on the waistband of the trousers, and thus hold the latter suspended from the belt. The button-grip is adapted to be adjusted up or down along the slide1l. 6., transversely of the beltand by this means the trousers may be adjusted up or down the same as with the ordinary suspenders.

There are other minor features and advantages connected with my belt attachment which will be set forth herein.

In the accompanying drawings I have shown my belt attachment constructed in the best form with which I am acquainted.

Figure 1 shows the inside face of portions of a waist-belt furnished with one of my attachments. There may be as many of these attachments on the belt as there are buttons on the waistband of the trousers; but as they will be all alike only one is here shown. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the attachment. Fig.3 shows a face and edge view of the slide only detached; and Fig. 3 is a face view of a slide, illustrating some minor modifications therein. Figs. 4:, 5, and 6 are views of the button-grip, the first two being face views and the latter a vertical section. Fig. 7 illustrates a slightlymodified form of the button-grip.

a is the slide, which is in the form of an elongated hoop or endless band, made to embrace the belt neatly. The side or bar of the slide on the inner face of the beltt'. 6., the face next the waistband of the trousers-is provided with notches a in its edge, of which there maybe any convenient number. Four are shown in the drawings.

1) is the button-grip, which is detachably secured to theinnerbar of the slide. This grip may be of any convenient form; but, as herein shown, it comprises a plate bent upon itself to form a button-pocket, one of the branches neck or attaching-threads of the button on the trousers. From the other branch, which forms the back plate of the grip, an attachingclip is formed by punching out two spring branches b This construction is clearly shown in.Figs. 2 and 6.

The button-grip b is attached to the slide a by presenting it to one of the notches a in the latter in such a position that the branches b will take under the metal at the margins of said notch and then forcing it into said notch. When the belt is put on, the several slides are moved and set to correspond with the buttons on the waistband, and the grips b are hooked under respective buttons. The position of the button in the grip is seen in Fig. 2, where it. is represented in dotted lines. If the trousers are too long, the grips b may be set in higher notches a in the respective slides a. Thus the slides a provide the necessary adjustment along the belt to adapt the grips to the respective buttons and the series of notches in the inner bar of the slide pro vides. for the adjustment of the grip up or down transversely of the belt.

I contemplate utilizing the slide a also as a slide for adjusting the length of the belt, and to this end I provide it, by preference, with a bar a (see Figs. 1 and 3,) to which the reversed end of the belt is secured. The slide may have the notches a therein formed as shown in Fig. 3that is, they may be made widestattheirinnerends. \Vheu constructed in this way, the clip. on the button-grip enters the widest part of the notch and is drawn down by the weight of the trousers. This renders the grip less liable to accidental detachment than when the notches are formed as in Fig. 8.

Fig. 7 illustrates a slight modification in the form of the back plate of the grip b, in which the material above the upper spring branch of the clip is removed. This construction does not alter the operation of the device, but lessens somewhat the amount of material employed.

Then a belt is provided with my suspending attachments, it will not be necessaryto detach the grips from the trousers when they are taken off. It will suffice to unelasp the belt and leave it attached to the trousers.

As shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, the slide a is constructed of a single strip of sheet metalcut out with a die, bent into form, and the overlapping extremity a of the narrower outer bar compressed into arecess in the extremity of the broader bar. This construction avoids the cost of soldering or riveting and is preferred, but itis not essential.

The attachment of the end of the belt to the slide is not essential, and the slide illustrated in Fig. 3 is not provided with a slot and bar for this purpose. In any case only one of the slides used would require to be so provided.

Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. The combination, with a Waist-belt, of an elongated hoop-like slide a, which embraces the belt and is adapted to be shifted along the same, the inner bar of said slide, which extends transversely of the belt, being provided with a series of notches'a, substantially as set forth.

2. An attachment for a waist-belt, consisting of an elongated hoop-like slide on and embracing the belt, said-slide having a series of securing devices on its inner bar to receive a button-grip, and adetachable buttongrip, also provided with a securing device to engage those on the slide, whereby said grip may be secured to the bar at different points, substantially as set forth.

3. An attachment for a waist-belt, consisting of an elongated hoop-like slide a, having notches a in its inner bar, and a button-grip I), having a clip composed of spring branches b adapted to engage the margins of the notches a in' the bar, substantially as set forth.
