Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, CHARLES M. VVEBB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vaterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Garment-Supporter Clasps; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, a view in front elevation of one form which a garment-supporter clasp constructed in accordance with my invention may assume, shoning the jaws closed and the cam-lever in its closed position; Fig. 2, an edge view thereof with a portion of the inner jaw broken away; Fig. 3, an edge view showing the jaws open and the cam-lever in its open position; Fig. 4, a view of the device in front elevation with the camlever removed; Fig. 5, a detached perspective view of the cam-lever Fig. 6, a view of the device in crosssection on the line a b of Fig. 3 looking downward.
My invention relates to an improvement in a garment-supporter clasp of the type in which two jaws are forced together by a camlever, the object being to produce a simple, effective, and convenient clasp constructed with particular reference to keeping the outer jaw in position to be operated upon by the lever.
With these ends in view my invention consists in a garment-supporter clasp having certain details of construction, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In carrying out my invention as herein shown the cam-lever 2 is formed about midway of its length and upon its edges with outwardly-projecting tooth-like stops 3 3, located opposite each other and having the form of tooth-like projections, the said lever being of approximately uniform width throughout its length. These stops are engaged by the side walls 4 4 of the lever-opening 5, formed in the outer jaw 6, which is connected by an integral bend 7 with the inner jaw 8. The engagement of the stops 3 by the walls 4 of the outer jaw 6 limits the outward movement thereof with respect to the lever, so that the jaw is always kept in position to be operated upon by the lever. The said lever is formed with a cam-bend 9, which coacts with the shoulders 10'of the opening 5, and with trunnions 11, entering perforations 12, formed in ears 13, extending forward from the side flanges 8 of the inner jaw 8. As shown, the jaw 8 is formed with teeth 14, which clasp a rubber pad 15, which is entered by gripping projections 16 upon the inner face of the inner jaw S; but the particular adaptation of the jaws to grip the fabric may vary as desired.
A horizontally-arranged loop 17 is clasped upon the rear portion of the bend 7 and provides for the attachment of the garmentsupporter to the webbing.
I claim In a garment-supporter clasp, the combination with an inner jaw formed about midway of its length with integral forwardlyprojecting perforated ears, of an outer jaw formed about midway of its length with a lever-opening, an operating-spring located between the two jaws for automatically separating them and consisting of the bend produced by folding the single piece of metal from which the said inner and outer jaws and spring are made, means applied to the said spring for the reception of the webbing from which the said garment-supporter is suspended; and a cam-lever provided at its inner end with pintles entering the said perforated ears for pivotally connecting the lever with the inner jaw from which it extends outward through the said lever-opening in the outer jaw, the said lever being formed at opposite points upon its edges and about midway of its length with outwardly-projecting toothlike stops which coact with the outer face of the outer jaw at points on the opposite sides of the said lever-opening therein for preventing the jaws from being spread too far apart by the said spring for the proper action of the said cam-lever.
