"ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK M. LINGO, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO OSCAR C. STEINMETZ AND ONE-THIRD TO JACOB A. CAIN, OF
COLUMBUS, OHIO.
SUSPENDER CONNECTION.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 24, 1906.
Application filed September 28, 1905. Serial No. 280.427.
T0 (l/ZZ whom it ntay concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK M. LINGO, a citizen of the United States, residing at C0- lumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspender Connections, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in suspender connections, and more particularly to a device for connecting the Web of the suspenders to the trousers of the wearer.
The object of the invention is to provide a connection for use on the web of what is known as invisible suspenders. Heretofore more or less trouble and inconvenience have been experienced with connections of this character, owing to the great amount of friction between the connection and the web, whereby the web is prevented from moving or sliding easily in the connection, and while not only soon wearing out causes the suspenders to become extremely uncomfortable to the wearer.
It is therefore the main object of my invention to provide a connection so constructed and attached to the Web of the suspenders as to allow the same a free and easy movement, thus readily accommodating itself to the different positions assumed by the body of the wearer, thereby preventing all binding and prolonging the life of the web.
Finally, the object of the invention is to provide a device of the character described that will be strong, durable, and eflicient, simple, and inexpensive to make.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel details of construction and operation, a preferable embodiment of which is described in the specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is an elevation of the outer side and lower end of the web of a pair of invisible suspenders, showing my improved trousers connection arranged thereon. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the inner or reverse side of the parts shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken on the line x 90 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a plan view of the connection.
In the drawings the numeral 1 designates the connection, which is provided in its lower end with a rounded attaching-loop 2, having the usual contracted lower end 3, the opening in the loop 2 being of such size as to permit the same being passed over the head of a button secured to the side of the trousers and then pulled upward, so that the goods about the button is forced intothe contracted portion 3 and the parts thus secured together. It is to be understood that in invisible suspenders the connections are made to buttons arranged on the inner side of the waistband of the trousers opposite the hips of the. wearer, and as these connections are identically the same I have deemed it suflicient for a clear understanding of my invention to illustrate and describe merely one of the same. The loop 1 extends or projects from the lower central portion of a flat irregular shaped plate 4,. which is provided with longitudinal slots 5 and 6 in its lower portion, the slot 6 being slightly longer at each end than the slot 5. The metal of the plate between the slots is rounded, so as to present a substantially oval shape in crosssection and provide a rounded bar 7, as more clearly shown in Fig. 3.' Near the upper end of the plate the metal of the same iscut and forced outward, so as to form an elongated keeper 8 and a slot 9, standing opposite the keeper, as best shown in Fig. 3. The slot 9, as well as the keeper 8, is somewhat longer than the slot 6 and extends beyond the same at each end. The keeper 8 at its ends is curved downwardly, as shown in Fig. 1, thereby more readily accommodating the members 11 and 12 of the suspenders-web 10, which will be hereinafter described. The slot 9 has no special function except to relieve friction opposite the keeper 8 and also serving to reduce the weight of the connection.
The web of the suspenders, which is indicated by the numeral 10, is disposed so as to provide divergent members 11 and 12, the continuation of one of which members is adapted to pass up the back of the wearer, while the continuation of the other member passes up the front of the wearers body to his shoulder, his arm projecting between the members. In this manner the members 11 and 12 depend from the shoulder of the wearer in the usual way. The web 10 while, as described, comprising the two members, is
5 ping the member 11, as best shown in Fig. 3.
By reason of the increased widths of the slot 6 and the keeper 8 the members are permitted to occupy and retain their divergent relation with each other, as is clearly illustrated [0 in Figs. 1 and 2.
It will be apparent that the web being looped over the rounded bar 7 it is free to slide or move thereabout, so that there is comparatively no friction, and the members 15 of the web are permitted to pass each other and move in the connection when a strain is produced on either member occasioned by the movement of the body of the wearer.
Of course it is to be undersood that the 20 connection 1, which is formed of metal, is suitably finished and polished and all sharp edges removed, so as to make its surfaces extremely smooth, thereby reducing the liability of friction and permitting the web to slide through the connection irrespective of the weight thereon caused by the trousers which it supports. I wish to further call attention to the fact that my connection is so shaped that it may be formed from a single piece of metal and produced at a single operation.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a suspender connection, the combination with the web, of a member comprising an attaching device and provided with two elon ated openings one of which extends beyond the other, a rounded bar separating the openings and around which the web passes, and an outstanding keeper carried by the member and loosely receiving the web.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FRANK M. LINGO.
