TOY BUZZER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 447,638, dated March 3, 1891.

Application filed October 4., 1890.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE T. FALLIS,I6- siding at St. Joseph, Buchanan county, and State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Toy Buzzer, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improvement in the class of toys which when whirled rapidly through the air emit a musical buzzing sound.

Figure 1 illustrates the manner of operating my improved toy. Fig. 2 is a perspective view thereof. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the same, taken on the line 3 3, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a view of a modification hereinafter referred to.

. My improved toy is constructed as follows:

A indicates a bar of wood or other desired material, preferably about seven to nineinches long, three-fourths of an inch Wide, and oneeighth to one-fourth of an inch thick. Upon the ends of the bar A are mounted cubical blocks a, aboutthree-fourths of an inch square, said blocks having each a central groove a and securely saddled on the ends of said bar A, the outer ends of such blocks a being chamfered, as shown.

0 indicates a rubber band about one-half of an inch wide and two inches long, which is stretched over the projecting edges of the head portions or blocks a, whereby said band is put under tension. By this arrangement it will be seen that the said band is held away from the body portion proper A, thus forming a space between it and the sides of the .bar A, for a purpose presently explained.

D indicates a rudder, which serves to keep the device when whirled through the air with its edge to the air, said rudder consisting of a flexible but stiff material, preferably two layers of stiff paper, the ends d d of which are spread apart and glued on the sides of the bar A, as will be clearly understood by reference to Fig. 3 of the drawings. To one end of the body portion is secured one end of a string E' about a foot long, the free end of which may be provided with a suitable handhold or tassel e, as shown.

By vigorously swinging the device the rudder D will cause the narrow edges of the device and the rubber to come into contact with the air, which causes the elastic to vibrate and produce a musical buzzing sound, which is increased or decreased as the momentum of the device is increased or decreased.

tVhile I prefer the construction shown, I\ do not desire to limit myself thereto, asne same may be varied without departing from my inventiouas, for instance, the rudder may be dispensed with, or, if desired, the ends of a cane or staff may be arranged. for the application of my improvement by cutting notches or inserting shoulders in the end thereof, over which the elastic bands may be strung. The cane can be swung by the handle, such construction being illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawings.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Batcut, is

1. A toy buzzer formed of a body portion having laterally-extended ends and an elastic band passed over said ends, whereby an airspace is formed between it and the body portion, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. A toy buzzer consisting of a bodyportioul having laterally-enlarged heads, an elastic passed over said heads, whereby spaces are formed between the elastic and the body, a rudder or steering-vane secured to the body, and means for holding and whirling the device in the air, substantially as and for the purpose described.
