UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SVANTE ANDERSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
MOUTHPIECE FOR PREVENTING SNORING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 587,358, dated August 3, 1897.
Application filed February 15, 1897. Serial No. 623,445- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, SVANTE ANDERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mouthpieces to Prevent Snoring, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in a device to be used by persons who are addicted to snoring while asleep; and it consists in the novel and peculiar construction thereof, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.
The object of my invention is to provide a device to be used to prevent snoring which shall be simple and inexpensive in construction, effective in use, and retained within the mouth in such a manner as not to be uncomfortable or fatiguing to the user.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention pertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe it, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the face of a man, showing the mouthpiece placed within the mouth and there retained by means of an elastic band around the head. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the device, and Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Similar letters refer to like parts throughout the diiferent views of the drawings.
A represents the mouthpiece, which may be made of wood, horn, or other suitable material, and is preferably formed at each of its ends with button-shaped heads a to prevent its longitudinal displacement while in the mouth of the user. The central part of the piece A is formed with an enlargement having a number of openings a for the passage of air. Secured to the piece A near each of its ends is a band or cord B, which may be of elastic or other suitable material, and is used to be placed around the head to retain the mouthpiece within the mouth of the user.
Snoring is caused by breathing with the mouth open, thus allowing a large and unbroken volume of air to enter the glotis, and by the use of my mouthpiece isprevented by causing the volume of air to be broken as it passes through the openings a in the enlarged central portion of the mouthpiece, which, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, is reduced between the central enlargement and the enlargements on its ends. These reduced portions rest within the corners of the mouth and allow the lips to come closely together, thus causing the air to be admitted through the openings in the central portion of the mouthpiece, which normally lies at about the middle of the mouth. As before stated, the ends of the piece are provided with enlargements a to prevent it slipping, but said enlargements may be omitted and thepiece may be retained in the mouth and prevented from slipping by means of the band B, as is apparent. v
It will be seen by reference to Fig. 3 of the drawings that the openings a intersect each other, and this is quite necessary, for the reason that if they were in alinement, or if only one opening should be employed, they or it might become clogged by reason of the accumulation of saliva therein, but as they intersect each other it is apparent that an accumulation of saliva to such an extent as to preclude the passage of air cannot occur.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- As an improved article of manufacture, a mouthpiece having the central enlargement a, provided with the intersecting openings a the enlargements a, on the ends of the piece and reduced portions between said enlargements and the enlargement a, and a securing-strap attached to the mouthpiece near its ends, substantially as described.
SVANTE ANDERSON.
