JULIUS CHEIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
l -atented June 19, 1906.
Application filed November 18,1904. Serial No. 233,255.
.Lo all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JULIUS CHEIN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in'Toys, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in toys; and the object of my invention is to provide a device for the entertainment and amusement of children.
My device is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows a side elevation of my device. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is an optional form of the device. Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view of the optional form shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a vertical section of an optional form of the vibrating sheet.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Upon a frame formed of wire, consisting of an upper hoop-section a and a handlesec tion a I provide a vibrating sheet I). I secure to the frame two hammers 0 (Z, consisting of a spring member 0, to which is secured a head 0 These hammers are secured to the handle-section a of the frame below the hoop-section a. These hammers may be secured to the frame by means of binding-tape e or in any other desired manner. I also prefer to secure a reinforcing-plate f to the vibrating sheet I) at the place where it is struck by the hammer members. A spring member 9, consisting of a bent Wire resting upon the vibrating sheet, is also secured to the handle member a to regulate the sound. The vibrating plate I) may be formed of parchment, skin, paper, metal, or other proper material.
The form of my device shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is the form preferably used, where the vibrating plate of parchment, skin, or paper is used, the material being stretched upon the hoop member a. An optional form of my device is shown in Fig. 3, in which the hoop-section and handle-section are stamped out of sheet metal or cardboard. A counterpart of the handle-section h is provided in this case and secured to the reverse side of the handle-section to provide a more neat and strong handle, the two parts being secured together by solder or in any other desired manner. I draw the metal tight in this optional form to give it the proper tone by stamping out the beads i and is near the margin and center, respectively, of the vibrating member 6. In this form of my device I prefer to secure the hammer member to the handle by means of slots Z m in the handle through which the ends of the hammer members are passed. The desired tightening of the vibrating section may be secured by the stamping out of a concave disk p near the center in place of the bead 7c.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a device of the type set forth, a wire frame consisting of a handle and a hoop formed integral with one another, a vibrating sheet stretched upon said hoop, a plurality of hammers each consisting of a spring member having a head, said hammers having their lower ends extending downwardly to engage the handle on its opposite sides, and means to secure said ends to said handle.
2. A toy consisting of a handle carrying a vibrating sheet, hammers each consisting of a spring member having a head, the lower ends of the members extending downwardly to engage opposite sides of said handle, an element for regulating the sound having its lower end engaging said handle and its upper end engaging the vibrating sheet, and means to secure said element and said spring members to the handle.
3. In a toy, a handle and a vibrating sheet carried thereby, hammers each consisting of a spring member having a head on its upper end, the lower ends of said members extending to engage the opposite sides of the handle, and means for rigidly supporting said lower ends of the spring members from the handle.
4. In combination with a handle having a vibrating sheet secured thereto, hammers having their lower ends engaging the handle,
a piece of Wire having its lower end engaging encircling the said lower ends to said the handle, and having its upper end curved hammers to said handle. T0 or bowed to engage said sheet. In testimony whereof I have afiixed my 5. In combination Witha handle and a visignature in presence of two Witnesses. 5 brating sheet secured thereto, hammers con- JULIUS CHEIN.
sisting of spring members having heads, the Witnesses: lower ends of the said members engaging the JUSTIN C. SAUAND,
handle on opposite sides thereof, and means JOHN J. MCDONALD.
