UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN KENNEDY, OF MONTREAL, CANADA.
APPARATUS FOR HOLDING DREDGES IN PLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 445,675, dated February 3, 1891.
Serial No. 358K761. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOHN KENNEDY, of the city of Montreal, in the District of Montreal and Province of Quebec, Canada, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Holding Dredges in Place; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to the means by which spuds of dipper-dredges are held in place at any height relatively to the hulls, providinga device by which they may be held in position at the point desired.
The apparatus may be thus brieflv described: Upon the inner face of the spud I secure a longitudinal strap running nearly the whole length of the spud and having perforations formed in it for a certain proportion of its length. Upon the face of the guide-posts is carried, preferably in sockets, so as to allow of a slight lateral movement, a horizontal bar having formed in it a vertical line of perforations corresponding to those in the strap. To lock the vertical strap and horizontal bar together, and thus secure the spuds and hull together at the desired relative height, I employ a palm, on the inner face of which are projections corresponding in shape and position to those in the horizontal bar and vertical strap. This palm is usually provided with a handle and may be connected with a cross-head attached to the guide-posts.
For full comprehension, however, of the invention, reference must be had to the annexed drawings, forming part of this specification, in Which-'- Figure 1 is a side View of the spud, Etc, and Fig. 2 a front view of same from the hull.
Like symbols denote the same parts.
A is the hull of the dredge, B B the guideposts, and G the spud.
D is the longitudinal strap, bolted to the inner face of the spud C and having formed in it perforations cl (Z of the shape and at the distance apart desired.
E isthe horizontal bar, with openings 6 in it corresponding in shape and position to those (1 carried in sockets F, secured in the face of the guide-posts B, so as to allow of slight lateral movement.
G is the palm or locking device, consisting of a plate with handle G and projections gg formed on its inner face and fitting into the perforations (Z and e. loose, or, if desired, attached, as shown in the drawings, to a fixed cross-head II, secured to the guide-posts by a resilient strap K or other suitable connection.
If desired, the straps D D may be doubled and a locking device securing strap and bar together, as herein set forth.
2. The combination, with the hull of a dredge, of the spud carrying longitudinally a perforated strap or straps, bar or bars carried in sockets and perforated, and palm having projections fitting into perforations in straps and bars, all as and for the purposes described;
JOHN KENNEDY.
