Description

No. 787,294. PATENTED APR. ll, 1905.
J. HICKLEB..
BILGB BLOCK.
APPLIUATION FILED JAN. so. 1905.
FIL-f.. l
Patented April 11, 1905.
JOHN HIOKLER, OF PASADENA, CALIFORNIA.
BILGEBLOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 787,294, dated April 11, 1905.
Application letl January SO, 1905. Serial No. 243,312.
To /l/ Irl/.om if ntf/,y concern:
Beit known that I, JoinY HIoKLnR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pasadena, in the county of Los Angeles and State of Oalifornia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bilge-Blocks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to bilge-blocks; and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a strong', durable, and eilicient device of this character which will be capable of withstanding the tremendous weight to which such device is subjected.
Another object is to provide a bilge-block comprising a tilting member and a bearingblocli. said parts being detachable one from the other in order that said members may be interchangeably used in the series of blocks necessary in supporting a vessel and in order that said members may be renewable in case of injury to any part thereof.
These and other objects are attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying'drawings, in which-- Figure l is a perspective view of a bilgeblock made in accordance with my present invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation.
Referring to the drawings Yfor a more particular description of my invention, the numeral l designates the tilting member of my bilge-block, and '2 is the bearing member thereof. Secu red tothe member l is a strong metal semitubular bearing-plate 3. This bearing-plate is provided with a semicircular convex bearing-surface si, provided with flanges 5 at its opposite ends. The upper wall t3 of this plate is flat and extends across the tilting' member l and is secured thereto by means of a bolt 7 passing through the member l and the flat upper wall of the plate 3. From the foregoing it will be noted that the tubular bearing-plate 3 is adapted to rock or tilt within the rounded recess 8 in the bearing-block .2 and that owing to thc fact that the flat upper wall 6 of said plate extends entirely across and covers considerable of the surface of the tilting' member l said member is not weakened, as would be the ease where a tubular metal device were used seated in a recess in the block l.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing' from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described bilge-block consisting of a tilting member having a plane upper and lower face, a hollow semicircular bearingplate having end flanges, a plane upper surface, a semicircular bearing-surface, said bearing-plate being' secured to the tilting' member by means of a bolt passing' through said block and through the plane upper wall of the bearing-plate, and a bearing member having' a semicircular recess therein to form a seat for the bearing-plate, the flanges at the ends of the bearing-plate serving to prevent sidewise movement of the tilting member, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN HIOKLER.
