UNITED STATES ATENT Fries.
THOMAS F. RIOI'IART, OF RIOHFIELD, PENNSYLVANIA.
FENCE-POST.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 365,099, dated June 21, 1887.
Serial No. 211,695. (No model.)
To a-ZZ whom it may concern.-
vBe it known that I, THOMAS F. RICIIART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Riclr field, in the county of Juniata, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and use ful Improvementsin Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in metallic tenceposts, and the objects and advantages will appear in the following dcscription.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation, Fig. 2 a' front elevation, and Fig. 3 a central longitudinal section, of a fence-post constructed in accordance with my invention.
Like letters indicate like parts in all the figures.
I form my post A preferably of sections A A A for convenience in casting, said sections being provided with shoulders or sockets A" (see Fig. 3) at their lower ends, adapted to fit within and be mounted upon the top of the preceding section to form the completed post. The front and rear walls of the postare provided with recesses A A and opposite perforations, A for the reception of bolts B, having heads B at their rear ends, adapted to fit the recesses A in the rear wall of the post, and screw-threaded at their front ends for the reception of binding-nuts B adapted to bear against a U shaped plate, C, the ends of which rest within the recesses in the front wall of the post, said plates being perforated to permit ot' the passage therethrough ol' the bolts 13. By this construction a rail-socket is formed,
adapted either for the reception of the rails D or the meeting ends thereof, as desired.
As one of the prime objects of my invention is rigidity and strength, I form at each side of the recesses transvcrsely-extending ears or lugs A (see Fig. 1,) which aid materially in adding rigidity to the rails, the front faces of said ears being in the same plane as is the bottom of the recesses A, thus forming abroad surface against which the rails may bear and be bound by the U-shaped clamps.
If desired, a bolt, E, having an eye, E, secured to the post, similar to the bolts B, may be provided, whereby a wire, either barbed or plain, may be retained in position at the top of the post.
Havingdescribed my invention and its operation, what I claim is 1. The post A, formed ofscctions A A A, and with recesses A A and apertures A, in combination with the bolts B, having heads B and nuts 13*, the plates 0, and rails D, substantially as specified.
2. The combination of the sections A A A, shouldered at their lower ends and mounted, as described, and formed with lugs A recesses A A, and apertures A, with the bolts B and E, plates 0, nuts Pf, and rails D, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS F. RIOHART.
