SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 642,011, dated January 23, 1900.
Application filed May 6, 1897. Serial No. 635,384. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMILY LEONORA SILL, of Flat Rocks, in the county of Kershaw and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fences; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in portable fences 5 and the object of the same is to provide an improved construction of fence which may be quickly and readily assembled when desired for use and which may be conveniently taken apart when it is desired to move the same from one place to another.
The invention consists in the novel construction hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of theportion of fence embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of .one of the rails removed from the fence. Fig. 4 is a view illustrating the form of rail to be used when it is desired to change the direction of the fence.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 1 indicates the cross-piece, which rests upon the ground and which is formed with a central passage to receive the lower reduced end 3 of the post 4. This post 4 is secured in position by a pin 5, which is inserted transversely through the cross piece 1 and the lower reduced end of the post. The braces 6 have their lower reduced ends 7 positioned in passages 8, formed in the cross-piece, and their opposite reduced ends inserted in mortises 10, formed in the post. Thus the post is securely braced and the parts so formed that they may be quickly and readily removed when it is desired to move the fence. The post is formed with the mortises 11 adjacent to its upper and lower ends to receive the reduced ends 12 of the rails 13 of the fence. The tenons or reduced portions of the rails are formed oppositelythat is to say, the tenon at one end of the rail extends from its upper edge, while the tenon or projection at the opposite end extends from the lower edge. The inner surfaces of the tenons are reversely inclined, as illustrated.
To assemble the above-described parts, the projections of the meeting rails are inserted within the mortises of the post, the projection from the upper edge of one rail resting upon the projection of the other rail. Wedges 14 are then inserted between the upper or lower surface of the rails and the top or bottom wall of the mortise, as may be desired, to wedge and lock the rails securely within the post.
16 illustrates the corner-post, which is formed with the mortises 17 18 extending at right angles to and intersecting each other and adapted to receive the reduced ends of the rails. These rails 19, which are adapted to be used when it is desired to change the direction of the fence, have their ends which extend Within the corner-post formed with mortises 20, which receive the reduced ends of corresponding corner-rails having reverselydisposed mortises, thus forming a secure connection. The opposite ends of these rails 19 are formed similar to the extremities of the rails 13. Each of the rails is formed at suitable intervals With transverse mortises 21, through which the pickets 22 are adapted to extend. Said pickets are formed with lateral shoulders 23 adjacent to their upper ends, by means of which they are properly positioned.
By means of my improved construction a stable fence may be quickly and readily as sembled upon the land which it is desired to inclose and may be as quickly and readily removed when desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The combination with a solid post provided with transverse mortises in the same horizontal plane and intersecting each other at right angles, of right-angularly-disposed rails having interfitting end tenonsremovably fitted in said mortises and provided with reversiblydisposed mortises, and a wedge removably inserted in one of such mortises.
