AUSTIN W. OOMSTOCK, OF MOUNT PLEASANT, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLATFORM-SCALES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 157,313, dated December 1, 1874; application filed May 4, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUsTIN W. GoMsTocK,
of Mount Pleasant, in the county of Henry and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Platform and other Scales; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in scales, and more particularly to the knife-bearings, to the clamp that sustains the hook that holds the knife-block, to the pivot-bearings of the knife-block, and fender, as hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side view of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a separate View of the knife-block, showing the pivot-bearings. Fig. 3 is a view of the bearing-surface of the foot. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section through the center of the platform and foot.
A is a platform, provided with a foot, B. Upon the under side of this foot B is a curved steel bar, 0, dovetailed into the foot, and arranged to slide out lengthwise. O O are two steel plates that are dovetailed into the ends of the foot, passing up through the platform A, the object being to prevenbthe piece 0 from slipping out, and also to admit of removing and replacing the plate 0 when the same becomes Worn or deranged. D is the knife-block or clutch itself, provided with the knife E upon its upper end, back of which are three lugs or projections, F, that are cast solid with the knife-block. Through these lugs the pivot f passes, securing the ring by which the block is suspended to the hook G. H is a clamp, made in a single piece with the hook G, and is made to hook over the timber I. The steel plates 0 G at the ends of the foot serve to hold the platform in place, in lieu of checkrods. J is a fender-plate rising above the hook G, and sustained in place by suitable guides g, or their equivalents. This plate J serves as a protection against dirt, water, ice, 850.
What I claim is- 1. The steel bearing 0, dovetailed into the foot, in connection with steel plates 0 C at its ends, likewise dovetailed into the foot, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The fender-plate J, retained in position by guides J on the hook G, for excluding dust,
Water, ice, &c., from entering beneath the plat forms of scales.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 12th. day of February, 1874.
AUSTIN W. COMSTOOK.
