No. 462,734. Patented Nov. 10,1891.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSIAH J. PRATER, OF NEIVTONIA, MISSOURI.
DRAFT-EQUALIZER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 462,734, dated November 10, 1891.
Application filed May 21, 1891. Serial No. 393,656. (No model.)
To all whom it may'concern:
Be-it known that I, J OSIAH J. PRATER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newtonia, in the county of Newton and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Three-Horse Eveners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements on eveners for three horses, the object of which is to enable the double whiflietree to be attached to the long instead of the short end of the evener and to enable the single horse to be attached to the short end of the evener andotherobjectshereinafterspecified. These objects I attain by means of the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a view in elevation of the entire device. Fig. 2 is a detail view showing one end of the evener, with attachments.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
A is the evener secured in any ordinary manner to the tongue B, preferably by means of a strap I5 to pass over the evener and bolted to the tongue at B and provided with a bolt 13*. Said fastening is made about onethird of the distance from one end A At said end A is secured one end of a rope or chain 0. The other end of said rope is secured to a rod D. Said rope is made of any suitable material, preferably wire, and passes between pulleys E and G and over the pulley E, said pulleys being secured to the tongue 13 of the vehicle. From pulley E said rope 0 passes over a pulley F, attached to the long end of evener A. Said pulley is provided with plates F which hold the rope on the pulley and are bolted to the evener-A and the double whiffletree II, and may be provided with a pin I, having a sleeve to form a roller to hold the rope in place. From pulley F the rope 0 passes over pulley Gr.v Pulleys E and G have a plate J to provide bearings for them, and also to hold the rope G in the groove of the pulley. From pulley G rope 0 passes to the rod D, to which it is secured by any suitable means. Rod D passes through a roove K in the end A of the evener and is provided with a hook D for attaching to the single whiffletree L. The groove or slot K is provided with an upper and lower plate, between which the rod D passes, for holding up the whiffletree L and to let the whiffletree play out and in to and from the tongue B. Said rod is provided with clasps D and D placed on opposite sides of the evener A on the rod D to limit the movement of the chain or rope C.
By this device I secure a direct draft on the tongue B and give the span of horses the long end of the evener, thus enabling the horses to be farther removed from the grain in drawing a reaping-machine, and forming a lever by means of the evener A and rope C for turning the tongue of the vehicle, and thus prevent the necessity of turning the machine by the near horse pulling by means of his neck-strap on the tongue.
This device may be used in all places where three horses are desired to be used on ma chines or vehicles having a tongue.
Having thus described my invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In combination with the tongue of a vehicle, an evener A for three horses, having the double whiiiletree II secured to the long end, anda rope G passing over pulleys E F G, secured at one end to a single whiflletree L by means of a rod D passing through one end A of the evener, the other end of said rope C being secured to the same end of the evener, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with the tongue of a vehicle, a three-horse evener consisting of an evener-A, provided with a rope 0, one end of which is secured at the short end of the evener and passing over pulleys at the tongue .IOSIAII J. PRATER.
