J. P.'WALBORN. DRAFT EQUALIZER.
No. 546,043. Patented SphlO, 1895.
Wfigesses I ANDREW EGRANA NETF ATENT rerun.
DRAFT-EQUALIZER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 546,043, dated September 10, 1895.
Application filed May 28, 1895.
To ttZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. WALBORN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Winfield, in the county of Union and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Draft-Equalizer, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in draft-equalizers.
The object of the present invention is to provide an equalizer which will enable three horses or draft-animals to be worked with a wagon or other vehicle or with a farm-machine, and to prevent any side draft in such vehicle or machine.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of a draft-equalizer constructed in accordance with this invention and shown applied to a vehiclepole. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional View illustrating the manner of mounting the bracket-plate on the pole. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the S-shaped bracket-plate. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective View illustrating the manner of mounting the evener-bars.
Like numerals of reference indicate correspondin g partsin all the figures of the drawings.
1 designates a vehicle-pole having its rear end connected with the running-gear of a vehicle (not shown), in the usual manner and having mounted on its upper face a substantially S-shaped bracket-plate 2, on the arms of which are fulcrumed front and rear oppositely-disposed evener-bars or levers 3 and 4. The forwardly-extending arm of the S-shaped bracket-plate, which is disposed transversely of the pole, has fulcrumed on it the inner end of the front evener-bar or lever 3, which extends laterally from the pole at the righthand side thereof. The rearwardly-extending arm of the bracket-plate has fulcrumed on it, at a point near its inner end, the rear evener-bar or lever 4., which projects laterally from the tongue or pole, and which is 10- cated principally at the left-hand side thereof. The rear lever or evener-loar etextends beyond the bracket-plate and is connected by Serial No. 551,012. (No model.)
links 5 to the front evener-bar or lever at a point intermediate of the ends thereof and near the center of the same.
The adjacent portions of the front and rear evener-bars are arranged withina guide or keeper 6, disposed longitudinally of the tongue and having its ends secured to the same and centrally connected with. the bracket-plate by abolt 7. The belt 7 extends through the tongue or pole and is provided at its lower end with a nut 8, and it has a flange 9 bearing against the upper face of the bracket-plate. The upper portion of the bolt is tapered and is provided with a nut 10, arranged on top of the guide or keeper. The pivots for fulcruming the levers or evenerbars 3 and 4t are supported by a tie or connecting-bar 11, extending diagonally across the tongue or pole and provided with central and end perforations for the reception of said pivots and for the bolt 7. A singletree 12 is connected by links or other suitable means with the outer end of the rear evener-bar or lever, and a doubletree 13 is connected with the outer end of the front evener-bar orlever and is provided at its terminals with singletrees. This arrangement of evener-bars or levers and singletrees enables one horse or draft-animal at the left-hand side of the pole or tongue to pull against a pair of horses or draft-animals at the right-hand side of the tongue, and there will be no side draft.
It will be seen that the draft-equalizer is exceedingly simple in its construction, that it is adapted to be readilyapplied to vehiclepoles, as well as to the draft-beam of a farming-machine, and that it enables one horse to pull against two animals without experiencing any side draft. 7
Changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this in vVention.
'VVhat I claim is The combination of a draft pole, a substantially S-shaped bracket-plate disposed transversely of the pole andsecured thereto, and having its arms extending forward and rearward at the sides of the pole, and located beyond the same and the hounds, the forwardly extending arm being disposed at the left hand side of the pole and the rearwardly extending arm at the right hand side a front evener bar fulcrumed at its inner end on the forward extending arm of the bracket plate and projecting laterally from the opposite side of the pole, a rear evener bar extending from the opposite side of the pole and fulcrumed adjacent to its inner end on the rearwardly extending arm of the bracket plate, and having its inner end connected to the front evener bar at a point intermediate of the ends of the same, a keeper disposed longitudinally of the pole and receiving the evener bars, the diagonally disposed tie-plate connecting the pivots of the evener bars, and crossing the guide, a bolt passing through the pole, the tie-plate and the guide, and provided at its ends with nuts, and having an intermediate flange bearing against the bracket plate, a singletree connected with the outer end of the rear evener bar, and a doubletree carrying singletrees and connected with the outer end of the front evener bar, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto 'afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN F. WALBORN.
