IMPROVEMENT IN THE M0)E OF CONVERTING WAGON-SHAFTS INTO POLES.

To all whom it may concern Beit known that we, GEORGE M. DARLEY and J AMES H. McLELLAN, of Nebraska City, in the county of Otoe and State of Nebraska,
'have Invented a Mode of Combining a CarriagePole andThills 5 and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of this specitication, in which- Figure l is a plan view, representing the draft-pole for two horses. Fig. 2 is a similar view, representing the draft-pole converted into thills for one horse. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of one of the thills, its dovetail connection, and the thill-box. Fig. 4 is a bottom view of one of the thills, with its dovetail connection and lip.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre spondin g parts in the several figures.
The improvement which we have made in the old convertible or combined thills and tongue for a carriage consists in three plates on the thill-bar, two of which are formed with a single dovetail-groove, and the other with two dovetail-grooves, in combination with two dovetail tongues, one on each thill, said tongues being perforated and furnished with a stop-ange, and held in proper position, when the thills are used for a single horse, by means of screw-bolts and nuts, and by both screwbolts and nuts and a double socl eted tongue point or sheath, when used for a double horse, as hereinafter described.
The arrangement is such that the ordinary hammer-strap may be readily applied when the thills are adjusted to serve as a tongue.
The following description ot' my invention will enable others skilled in the art to understand it.

The sheath C is socketed at g g to receivethe outwardly-directed ends of the thills, and its contracted portion n is provided with a shoulder, o, for the strap or ring of the hold-back bar. Having described ourinvention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the single dovetailed pieces b b, double dovetailed pieces c c, thills B B, perforated dovetailed blocks t t, lips l Z, bolts n a, and the double-socketed sheath C, substantially as and for the purpose herein described.
2. The combination of the device g i with the above-named devices, in the manner and for the purpose described.
