Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID E. SUMNER, OF FRANKLIN, NEBRASKA.
CLEANING COMPOSITION.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 444,187, dated January 6, 1891.
I flirtation the May 28, 1890. Serial No. 353,487. (Na specimens.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DAVID E. SUMNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Franklin,in the county of Franklin and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Compound, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a preparation that is designed to be used in the cleansing ofclothes from grease spots and stains, and is also especially adapted to be used on fine silks, Worsteds, and similar goods that could not be Washed without injury to the fabric, its composition being such that no injury is sustained from the. use thereof.
The ingredients that are combined to form this compound are beef-gall, cactus-root, soap, sal-soda, borax, oil of sassafras, and water, being combined together in the following proportions: beef-gall, one pound; cactus-root, one pound; soap, one pound; sal-soda, one pound; borax, one-half pound; oil of sassa: fras, one-half ounce, and soft Water, two gallens.
In preparing my compound I thoroughly pulverize the cactus-root and place it, together with the soap, beef-gall, and sal-soda, in the specified amount of soft water. The mixture is then subjected to the ordinary action of steam until the dissolution of some and the intimate combination of all the elements is complete, the use of a spatula or other mixing medium aiding the admixture thereof. A small amount of oil of sassafrasis now added to the completed mixture to perfume it and render it more agreeable to handle.
The soap that I use in this composition may be any soap that will not be injurious to the fabric on which the composition is used.
I am aware that soap has been and is used with various compounds for the purpose of cleaning clothes; but I am not cognizant of its use with the elements herein mentioned and in the proportions specified, nor of the use of any of the other ingredients combined as described. I
Having thus described my preparation, its proportion of admixture, and the preparation thereof, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described composition of matter to be used in cleaning and removing stains from clothing and fine fabrics, consisting of beef-gall, cactusroot, soap, sal-soda, borax, oil of sassafras, and water, prepared and combined in substantially the proportions speci- In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID E. SUMNER.
