Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RICHARD F. HALLEOK, OF NEIV YORK, N. Y.
WASHING PREPARATION SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 449,879, dated April '7, 1891.
Application filed August 1, 1890. Serial No. 360,686. (No specimens.) 5
To all whom it 11mg concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD F. HALLECK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vashing Preparations, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved liqnid preparation to be used for washing clothes; and the object of my invention is to provide a preparation of this kind which dissolves and removes the dirt, &c., from the clothes very rapidly and effectually without requiring the clothes to be rubbed or beaten, and which does not in any way alfect the clothes in j uriously.
The improved liquid preparation for washing clothes is prepared in the following manner: In one gallon of a light hydrocarbon from petroleu n1- such as kerosene, for exampleone-half pound of camphor is dissolved, and one quart of onions are placed into the hydrocarbon-and-camphor solution and'allowed to stand for two days. The onions are extracted by the hydrocarbon and are then removed from the mixture by straining it. This mixture is used in the following manner: One table-spoonful of the mixture is added to five to ten gallons of boiling water, the clothes are rubbed with soap until suds are formed, and are then boiled for about ten minutes in the mixture of my improved liquid preparation and water, and are then taken out and rinsed in cold water and blued, if desired, and then wrung in the ordinary manner and dried. The camphor takes the smell from the kerosene and is also a disinfectant.
The hydrocarbon dissolves the fats, dirts,
greases, &c., in the clothes and the onion extract disengages or releases from the clothes the fats, greases, dirt, and other impurities dissolved by the hydrocarbon. The clothes need not be rubbed, but are merelyboiledin the mixture of water and Inyimproved liquid preparation, and thereby all the dirt is removed, as is also any infection that may be contained in the clothes. 7
None of the ingredients of my improved preparation :1 ffect the clothes inj uriously, and as the clothes need not be rubbed or beaten the fibers are not broken or strained, and thus the durability of the clothes is increased.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A preparation for use in washing clothes,- con'sisting of a light hydrocarbon oil of petroleum, camphor, and extract of onions, mixed aboutin the proportions as herein shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
RICHARD F. HALLEOK.
